by Kay A. on This place made me want to hurl -- both times I went... But in a good way! The food was so good, that I kept eating, to the point that I wished I could be one of those LA women who chuck it out, only my purpose would be to make room for more! The first time, we had the 11-course tasting menu, which was great since you have the flexibility to choose items you really want, rather than getting stuck with some things that you probably wouldn't prefer, as happens with most tasting menus. I have to note that the lobster pot pie in the tasting menu was good, but the flavor and experience was nothing like the full-size portion you can get off the regular menu at XIV or other Michael Mina restaurants. Last night, we selected off the DineLA menu. We had all three starters -- which were all hits among us. They were offering the halibut instead of the snapper last night, which one of us got -- she thought it was well-prepared, but nothing exceptional flavor-wise. Two of us chose the jidori chicken tajine. It was fabulous! I'd had a tajine at Michael Mina's Seablue, but it was nothing like this one. The combination of the chicken with the eggplant puree/baba ghanoush, onions, carrots, and maybe dates? worked perfectly together, and it was served with this rice that had chicken, dried fruits and nuts, which I could have been happy with in itself. The portions were also huge -- half my plate was uneaten -- not for lack of trying!!! It was topped off by dessert, although I was already at my breaking point. But how could I resist freshly-baked cookies? Blasphemy, I say! So down those cookies went, with the rootbeer float. (While my friends downed their nutella custards, oddly with a passion fruit foam, which they said did complement it.) Thus, my dilemma of wishing I could have the talent of hurling -- only to make more room for this wonderful food. Instead, I returned home with a pain in my belly -- but with great memories...
by Carina F. on I was taken here by two of my New Yorker friends who used to in San Diego too. So they knew my taste. But they didn't want to go anywhere with a $40 cover and a long line...So we took the subway here and walked many blocks to The Park. Despite the fact that it was humid/sticky as hell and none of us should've even bothered having a shower, not having to wait in a line or pay a cover was relieving. I'd had high hopes of NYC nightlife but it all depends on who takes you and where they take you, right? This wasn't really what I'd had in mind but whatever. The Park is a huge brick building with a restaurant and a nice outdoor area with foliage, a back bar, and a rooftop bar. If it were a normal liveable temperature I would've enjoyed myself, but that weather was unbearable! I don't know how anyone can function being sticky and drunk at the same time. The A/C was pumping to no avail. The first bar we went to, I tried to get a SugarFree Red Bull vodka. No Sugar Free...So I got a regular one, and the glass was a tad bigger than a shotglass, overpacked with ice, and was $15. Wow. Tiny overpriced drink. At least when I get charged $15 in San Diego or San Francisco, the drink is a normal size. Another memorable part of that bar was the jerk of a server who was obviously a bitter grumpy soul. I was waiting for a drink and the tray stand fell over. It was so dark I had no idea what happened and had been startled by the noise but couldn't figure out the problem so I didn't pick it up. After 5 minutes this high-ponytailed guy sighs loudly and yells rudely "don't worry, I'll pick it up!" I wasn't going to let that fly so I yelled back at him that I didn't even know what'd happened. Anyway, he soured my experience, especially since he's an employee... The rooftop bar was packed but I could see it being cool if there weren't so many people and there was some functioning A/C. DJ was up there too. The outside patio was nice too (except for the smoke). The back bar had tables and was fairly accessible too. Overall a nice venue, just don't go there when the weather is so nasty. People were pretty dressed up. Late 20s, early 30s crowd. I see it as more of a casual place, but there weren't too many scrubs wandering around...
