I just don't like this place. Sorry, I've tried. I like the design of the space itself. Many of the DJs who play here are excellent. But everytime I go here I end up waiting in line to get in, then half an hour later waiting in line for the bathroom which is just aggrivating. Maybe they just weren't expecting to have nights like Hearthrob here that pull as many people as they do? The sound here is harsh and generally not very good -- you can probably chalk that up to the acoustics of the room which is a big reflective box. They could do a lot more with this place ... it hints at some of the spots in Chicago I love to go hear music at, but it falls short in the way that most Boston dance venues do - not enough attention paid to getting a good sound system and tuning it to the room (or tuning the room to it in this case). The Phoenix Landing is far from flashy but they've managed to get it right somehow. Middlesex ... step up your game.

Just what I was looking for on laid-back Saturday night. A spattering of people hanging out, conversing, and enjoying drinks in our lovely city. They have a wide, circular bar which reminded me of Portal's Tavern in West Portal. Some older Latino locals were playing pool and everything was pretty mellow. I knew I wouldn't find too many hipsters or Walnut Creeksters hanging out in a joint like this so it really made my night. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind tearing it up and seeing all the pretty people once in a while, but most of the time I tend to gravitate toward places like Clooneys - where people gather to enjoy a drink and partake in that old past-time, conversation. The service was a wee bit slow - it wasn't crowded but the bartender made a sloth look like a roadrunner. It just killed me watch him sluggishly count his money. Oh and to the girl who was pontificating about Marxist Theory and the Founding Fathers - too bad about that booming voice of yours, otherwise I'd find you cute.

So, I'm not sure how I feel about this one either. When I walked in, I felt like I was in a high-class Dave & Busters. I half-expected there to be cosmic bowling in the back (no there isn't). I don't know why. Maybe because of the setup. After awhile, it seemed like a posh pretentious Hollywood club (ahhhh, home), but maybe that's what they're going for. The sushi was really good. We were 0-5 when we tried to order sake...how can a place that's only been open for 2 weeks possible be out of the 5 sakes we chose?? The manager was very accomodating though - he brought over different ones for us to try until we found one we liked. Good clubby techno music but the place was pretty empty at midnight still. Cool fishtank. Can't wait to see what this place evolves into.
