Walking down Ranstead Street, you get the feeling that you'd never find this place. But a door reveals itself as the entrance to this place. You'd expect some burly dude with a gun asking for the secret code before you can enter. The red lighting leading to the actual bar again makes you wonder if a gangster is going to tell you to beat it before trouble starts. But it all fades away when you enter this dimly lit bar. Seating is limited, and the hostess actually requires all people on the waiting list to stand outside. Its nice to know that you can sit at the bar and not have worry about someone standing 1 foot behind you, making you feel crowded. Bartenders know their stuff. From the listed drinks on the menu to the "give me something with gin and bitters", they are all good. Pricey ($12 a drink), but well worth it. A few tacos from El Rey adjacent to this place is god if you are looking for some pre or post-dinner snacks.

OK, last weekend's experience makes me miss eleven50. Came here because a friend was having a birthday party here. We were able to get right in because the birthday boy who was with us was actually DJing there that night. They took us in a showed us to a table in the side room (or "Venetian Room," if you want to sound fancy) near where he was spinning. Then about 15 minutes later they come in and tell us to leave the table because they sold it to someone else. That sucked, and I felt bad for the birthday boy and wife. Management very douchey about it too. Music was fun and we danced around for a bit, but I digress from my tales of douchebaggery. Bartender in that area was an ass. Husband asked nicely if he could have an olive (he had just ordered two $8 vodka tonics) and the bartender told him "No, we need those for martinis." Later I ordered myself a bottle of water which cost $5, and asked for whatever the house single malt was for our friend. This dumbass served him a glass of Jack Daniels. We started to object but the guy had already moved on to screw other people. I ate all of his olives while he ignored us, and then we left.

This place is so awesomely cool! I had heard of this place from one of my coworkers and when I told my boss he said he saw it on the Food Network. The Varsity turned from a possible place to try to a must go place. This place is right off of the freeway, very easy to find and also extremely busy. We parked, ordered, got served and ate in the car! A real drive in! We asked for ketchup and he brings us a whole bottle. =P We also beat him to the punch but they're supposed to come back for your trash too. Way cool experience. Chili Cheese Slaw Dog - I ordered one thinking it was going to be pretty big but in reality I need two of these! They are so good! The slightly sweet slaw is perfectly paired with the chili, cheese and the beef hot dog. Hot dog heaven! I really wanted to take one home. In fact, I'm still thinking about it right now. Fries - Delicious! Reminds me of In-n-out but better. Frozen Orange "FO" - Cool idea but a little too hard to drink with a straw. I later found a spoon (wrapped) lying on the floor. Must've dropped it. I guess you're supposed to spoon it? There is also a sit-down area but the drive in experience trumps all. Cash only place.
