My expectations weren't as high as my hopes for this place and last night they roundhouse kicked it out of the ballpark. Soft openings in my experience are usually riddled with slow bartenders, unorganized bouncers, or simply packed to the gills so you can hardly get a look around. The Chelsea Room had none of that and was simply a very good time. Two bars on either end of the basement space ensured approachable queues for drinks while the dance floor smack in the middle gave it a rambunctious flavor. While there were plenty of booths and banquettes for those teetering on too high heels, most of the crowd was on their feet dancing to the DJ that played everything from Kid Cudi to African Tribal music. And somehow the (hot) bongo drum player as an elevated centerpiece to the scene kept pace with it all. The Chelsea Hotel is a NYC landmark with a raucous rock and roll history. Creating a club/lounge out of the basement could easily disappoint diehards but this was plain fun, the old fashioned way. I look forward to watching it evolve and just hope they keep it simple...too many stars before it have crashed and burned in those hallowed halls.

Sugar Cafe is your typical, spacious, modern lounge with a full bar and a sugary sweet drink list. Compared to Sugar Lounge in Hayes Valley, the Cafe doesn't live up to its competitor. But it's a decent place if you're perusing the streets downtown. Just don't order their specialty mojitos. They look and taste like swamp,

We (my husband & I) ended up here right before 11 on a Saturday night, altho we did call ahead to see if they'd seat us. I wouldnt recommend going that late, but they treated us well & I didnt feel rushed. The waiter was great with explaining the menu, suggesting # of plates, and we got a great Lebanese red wine recommendation from our waiter, who knew the wines well, however i tend to like to see the food menu before choosing (since i had never looked at their menu, ever). We shared a little, but since he's not veg he got 2 meat dishes (a burger kabob & salmon). I didnt eat those (but he liked the kabob better) so i'll talk about what I ate... -Turkish hummus: a hot hummus with butter, SOO good... "Small" is a good portion size for 2. And next time I'll know it's really hot & won't touch the sizzling plate, or burn the top of my mouth. Served on an israeli newspaper. - Crispy Haloumi: Basically fried cheese in fig sauce with pine nuts and mmmness. It's less tasty onces it cools off, but still good! This was plenty of crispy cheese for 1 person... im glad i was sharing. - 4 Baby stuffed rice peppers with dill yogurt sauce: very tasty, very small peppers. - Chopped mushroom in filo dough (you get 2). Good but nothing super special. - Dessert! "The New School" (crispy & chocolate, i think icecream?) & Chocolate Laffa (warm chocolate delish). Overall I think the food was good, I felt full after all that but we did have dessert too. At the end of the night (and a $60 bottle of wine) it was ~$75 person. Great place to try for a special night out.
