I have been going to Middlesex about once a year since I moved to Boston 8 years ago. It served a purpose, hence 4 stars - I'm just not sure if that is my purpose anymore. This is maybe the only place to listen to old school hip-hop and dance in Cambridge and Boston. Unfortunately after last night, I have been thinking about starting a line of Lesbian club wear to keep sketchy guys away from me. Yes beware of the line! We got there at 11:30pm and the line was not moving. Luckily, my hot, intelligent friend went to the front and engaged the bouncer in some conversation to get us in - hooray! In the past I have been here and have felt non-threatened, dancing with MIT students, last night I felt like lion prey for black guys. Help! Yes, I do attract African-Americans in daily life but put that in a club and you need to be on the defense. It seems like there was a pretty large group of men in the club - who were losers - going around trying to mac on women. No - I am not interested!!! Just here to dance, no, not with you! It is not fun for you to rub your butt against mine or try to steal my hands to dance. Get a life. Despite the loser guys, you can still have fun. Girls, if you really like to boogie and break dance, don't wear a skirt. Also, make sure your feet are in comfortable shoes b/c you are here to dance and not sit in a corner. When I get to Middlesex, it's usually after a few drinks so I never really use the bar. I assume it is crowded, mediocre and maybe poor service because it is so busy.

The Ear is my favorite bar in NYC. I love it so much that I forgive it for being in Manhattan. I visited the Ear for the first time at age 16 on a weekday afternoon in 1993 and Debbie Harry was at the next table. I have loved this place ever since. The food is excellent. Don't even bother looking at the printed menu. Everything you want to order (oh... right, unless you want a burger... which I suppose you might) is on the chalkboard specials list. This is a rare place in the city where you can get a full meal - entree with two sides (vegetable of the day and usually a rice pilaf of some sort) for under $10. The chicken marsala, when they have it, is great and, like, $8 or $9. There is nothing exceptional about it at all, but I even love the bread and butter that you get while you wait for your food. Because I am cheap and it is very affordable and drinkable, I always have the house wine when I go. Also, the PIES are wonderful. So, save room for dessert.

Went to the Nellie McKay concert last night. They had set up tables and chairs. She played a long time, I think over two hours. After sitting in that uncomfortable little chair for most of 5 hours (had to get there early to get a halfway decent table since it wouldn't be standing room at the front) I started to think I might have preferred standing. They should get some more comfortable chairs if they want to start having seated shows. And they should serve better food. Ugh. We didn't have time to get dinner (since we had to get said table) and ended up eating their crappy food. Oh, and their drinks could be better and bigger. BUT... even with all the down sides, it's a classy place, the concerts are usually decently priced and the performers they get are great. So I actually enjoyed going last night... even with all the drawbacks.
