First of all - I must say that we didn't go in. There was a promoter kid outside saying he could get girls in free and guys would be $15 and that once inside we'd get free bottle service. In line the door prince and door princess said, "No - everybody pays 15". Then we asked - promoter kid - "Will we still get the bottle service?" Promoter kid asked door prince - who was wearing sunglasses at 11pm on a Saturday - "Will they still get bottle service?" The door prince said - "With all due respect, I'm not going to say if they will get anything and I don't have to. If your guests aren't coming in they should step aside." I can't stand pretention like this - no club is worth it. So...sorry Hiro Ballroom...you get 1 star because all I saw of you was your awful help staff outside

The Ear is my favorite bar in NYC. I love it so much that I forgive it for being in Manhattan. I visited the Ear for the first time at age 16 on a weekday afternoon in 1993 and Debbie Harry was at the next table. I have loved this place ever since. The food is excellent. Don't even bother looking at the printed menu. Everything you want to order (oh... right, unless you want a burger... which I suppose you might) is on the chalkboard specials list. This is a rare place in the city where you can get a full meal - entree with two sides (vegetable of the day and usually a rice pilaf of some sort) for under $10. The chicken marsala, when they have it, is great and, like, $8 or $9. There is nothing exceptional about it at all, but I even love the bread and butter that you get while you wait for your food. Because I am cheap and it is very affordable and drinkable, I always have the house wine when I go. Also, the PIES are wonderful. So, save room for dessert.

I'd give this place 5 Stars just for having been a restaurant/bordello combo in Barbary Coast days, but it's so much more than the place Sally Rand perfected her Fan-shimmies. So many great shows! Did I see Television here in the 90s? Dunno, 'cause all the great bands I've enjoyed here have been scrunched into a huge single-celled memory. There was the one totally mellow, sitting on the floor Dirty Three Show where a buddy whom I'll refer to as Porkchop got two feckless nerds in a headlock. Two at once! Hell, let's do that now! Sadly, I wasn't at that show. But I saw the pictures... You can see squealy-feely indie rock here on any given night. On the same stage where bumps and grinds were once leered at, where Duke Ellington had his brass section bust out the plungers. All Right!
