Some friends and I recently visited Yoshi's to see Zoe Keating play. Please bear in mind that this review has nothing to do with Mrs. Keating's performance, which was flawless. The food at Yoshi's was good, though not amazing. The atmosphere was impressive, and the wait staff was very friendly. Why, then, am I only giving them three stars? Is it because they forgot my drink order? Of course not. Both shows that night were sold out, and I'm sure the waiters had their hands full. Is it because of the one-drink-minimum-per-person policy in the venue, despite the fact that we already paid for dinner at the restaurant? Maybe a little. Call me cheap or lowbrow or whatever you wish, but never before have I been to a concert where everyone HAD to order something. I've been to venues where if you wanted to sit in the balcony you had to order something, but I've never been to a place that had an honest-to-(insert deity here) "one drink minimum" policy for EVERYONE, which seemed to be the case here. That said, I can almost forgive them for it despite the fact that the waiters spent the whole time wandering around the audience to make sure everyone was doing their part. No, what really irked me was this: I was thinking about recording some of Mrs. Keating's performance as a memento of the event, but decided against it because I figured the venue or Mrs. Keating herself would have some sort of rule against it. Three or four songs into the set, Mrs. Keating specifically ASKED audience members to record her performance. I dutifully whipped out my iPhone and started to record. I got through a song and a half before a member of the staff came and asked me to stop. Now, I can understand if a venue has a rule against recording performances, but if the artist herself specifically requests that her fans record her performance, don't you think they might want to make an exception? Or at least talk to the artist about it beforehand to make sure everyone's on the same page? I mean, really, guys. There's atmosphere and then there's haughty douchebaggery. Unfortunately I think Yoshi's has a little bit more of the latter than the former.

I called in a to-go order and my mom went to pick it up. When she returned, the order was wrong, so she drove back up to the restaurant with all the food to get the correct order. Upon getting back home we realized that they corrected the meat, however some of our sides were missing as well as the pickles/onions/bread. I called to let them know what had happened, and started to eat my meal. The phone rings and it is the owner. He called me AT MY HOUSE to let me know that his staff was right and I was wrong. He then pulled the race card and said that I was complaining because he is a "black-owned business". What a jerk. My hard earned money will never go into his pocket again. Too bad because the food was alright.

Frickin Awesome place to go on a Thursday Night. 1984 is the name of the evening and you will party like it is 1999. I have had more fun here than one person should be alowed. I usually dance so much I end up getting like a 3 hour work out. Cool people and a great mix of all ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, and "cliques". I feel like I am there with everybody I went to high school with: jocks, stoners, punkers, preppies, hip hoppers, goths, you name it.
