by James Glish on sooo good--gorgeous inside, really inventive menu and--best of all--had a friendly waitress (which is so out of character for these trendy places--you know how sometimes waitresses in restaurants where a lot of celebs dine think that they're celebs too? yeah. she wasn't like that). Anyway she was pumped to get my liquored up on her favorite booze and suggested great meals, so I'll for sure be back!
by Royce Schwentker on Went with a pal who was so happy. "Gloria's is in Austin now!" He is a Dallas transplant. Grew up there. Been here since college. And while there's a lot of whining in this town about "Dallasization," he's settled into Austin and her vibe nicely. Now we were going to eat at one of his favorite back home places. His remarks were that the new joint is way more swanky than the original Gloria's. Ok, but I wanted to know how the food held up. After the meal he said it was all on par, except the black bean dip that came with the chips. "No taste," he said. I had to agree. It was the low point in an otherwise good meal. - Salsa was good. Nice kick. Nothing to write home about, but far from bad. I liked the consistency of the chips. They're a little thicker. Also on the ride with the chips, that tasteless black bean stuff. - The plantain appetizer was sweet and kind of perfect. Served with sour cream and black beans. We tried to get the waitress to tell us how they made them so delicious. "I don't know. I haven't been in the kitchen." The classic "I am not allowed to tell you" dodge tactic. - I had a lunch special. "Nancy's favorite." I can't argue with her. It's good. The "tamals" are what we would call "tamales." Wrapped in banana leaves instead of corn, they make a striking presentation. The outside corn of the tamal is soft, almost like pudding with a delicious meat in the middle. Then there was the pupusa. An Elsi's regular, I was curious how they would stack up. I had the pork AND cheese. Elsi's is greasier fair, with Gloria's pupusa almost delicate. Good eating. (Not better than Elsi's, just different. Though I did not get the nap coma Elsi's induces when I eat there for lunch.) The rice made no impression on me, which, again, is better than "bad." And then more black beans which were seasoned nicely. - If you were counting. There was black bean dip with the chips and salsa. Black beans with our plantain appetizer. Black beans with our entrees. I didn't order the dessert, but I am a little afraid they would find someway to accompany the flan with black beans. (In other words. Overkill on a theme.) - The food made me want to drink a mojito. Big time craving for one. But it was lunch on a work day and the guy who was with me was my boss, so, no mojito for me. (Not that I would ever do that.) - Service was prompt. Beverage servers were attentive. I had Sprite and they tried to refill it with water three times. (S'all good. Means I got three Sprites. Being a Sprite drinker I am quicker on the draw the beverage guys, it's self-drink-preservation.) The lady at the table next to us had an issue with her meal, and the manager was all over it, working to make it right. - The inside was nice. A little over the top, but in a funky kind of fun way. The inside is HUGE which I never would have guessed having walked past that spot in the Domain several times. Take your special lady, it's a good place for that sort of thing. It's a nice fit for the Domain.
by Joon Y. on Ive only been here for the Bierfest competition but the venue seemed pretty clean and staff was very attentive and friendly. Great patio area! The bartenders were relatively quick and the drinks cheap and stiff just the way I like them. The bathrooms would use a renovation though. Can't say much about the music since they were just playing weird German drinking music all night at the Bierfest.
