by Forest Gustin on I realized leading up to this weekend before Valentines day that the wife and I had never been to Top Flr. I'm not sure why, I've been following it for a few years and have been meaning to go, just didn't make it before this past Saturday. We got an early reservation on a very busy Saturday (the weekend before a Monday Valentine's day, everybody was booked). It was still light out when we arrived and after sitting at the bar to have a cocktail before we were seated, I got an immediate first impression. This place looks like a nightclub when the lights are on. The drab and dark colors reveal chips in the paint, burn marks on the bar, scuffed up tables, and just has an overall "worn" look to the place. Strange layout with two bars. I can't emphasize enough how I HATE having to sit so close to other diners, but with the layout as it is, I'm not sure how they could do it any other way. Nice 6-7 top table looking out over the street in the upper dining room would be cool for a larger table. Once the sun went down and the candlelight kicked in, boom, the place looked all chic and what not. Regardless, I think this place needs just a little color. Reservations are overly complicated. You have to call between 3-6pm to book. This place would benefit by having and Open Table account or something similar. The cocktail menu is decent and our cocktails were made well. Even though we walked in during the wait staff line up (the place opens at 4:30pm and this was about 5:30), our service at the bar was pretty good. Looks like going to the lower bar would be better early. The menu reads very nicely, and I was excited about the food. We had the mac-n-cheese which I didn't really care for. Alot of reviews described it being something great and ours was kind of disappointing. Also had a Brussel sprout side that was great. I'm very happy with the trending of Brussel sprouts on menus lately. We tried the tuna tar tare and some pork skewers. They were both very good. The presentation of the tar tare was nice and the pork skewers were cooked perfectly. I'll be back to try some more food and to try to get comfortable with the setting. Funny, I used to work at Marco's Pita when it occupied the now Papi's location, and the space Top Flr is in used to be a convenience store and laundry mat. I played Ms. Pac Man in the old laundry mat at the same spot that my wife and I ate dinner. Also, why do people still go to Mary Mac's?
by Jennifer N. on Rude doormen and host. I went here with two of my girlfriends. While we waited patiently in line, the doorman and the host didn't even bother acknowledging us. Apparently the host is the shot caller, he ignored us and let the people behind us go in. We weren't the only ones discriminated, a lot of other girls left feeling frustrated with their indifferent attitudes. And the doormen were making snide remarks to girls who left the line. Apparently they have a problem with everyone's dress code. Wtf? A--holes. Goto Park instead, it's right around the corner and you'll have more fun there!
by Harris Minella on After years of hearing about how kickass this place is, I finally ventured all the way to Pier 66 on Friday night. Asside from the place being ridiculously packed, it was pretty awesome. I don't know how you could go wrong with a bar on the water in the summer in NYC. The only down side in my opinion is that it is super expensive--which is why they don't get 5 stars.
