by Ann Marie A. on THE EVENT South Beach, The Labor Day Weekend Kick-Off Friday, 9/3/10 (Yes, thanks, Captain Obvious...I'm posting this late.) THE PROMOTION I found out about this event through http://going.com, posted by DRE. Cost to get in was confusing...Header on post said only $5 B4 11pm On Guestlist; but on the flyer we found, it was Ladies $5 and Guys $10 before 11pm. This is the kind of inconsistency about club promotions that annoys the heck out of me. FRONT DOOR & SECURITY My friends and I arrived early, so there was no line, but men had to get patted down. I was offended by this and felt left out. Where's the security women to pat us chicks down? You know...we can also wield knives and throw down!!! We have stilettos for weapons and we have more hiding places! Sorry - had to add that...I just watched "Machete". THE MUSIC (Hip-Hop/R&B) - DJ DVS Transitions were smooth enough that it did not call attention to itself. That's a good thing!!! No repeated songs that I noticed. There were hardly any people on the dance floor during DVS' set...not because of his skills, but because he was the 1st one out, warming it up for everybody. Most peeps were lounging or standing on the sidelines still, having drinks. This is not a complaint for me...I love having space to tear up. DVS was my favorite DJ of the 3 spinning that night...he played more mainstream music (more my style), his mixing technique did not interrupt the flow of the music and he did not repeat any songs that I could recall. People started getting on the dance floor around 11:30pm. - DJ J Rock Repeated Songs? YES Song choices for mixing left me standing in puzzlement a few times. Played songs with two different moods at times, which interrupted my dance flow. Hey...I don't make this stuff up. I don't hate...just stating facts, Jack! - DJ Mind Motion Repeated Songs? YES Much of the hip-hop music choices I heard from Mind Motion was not familiar to me but the KMEL-ers loved it and many were having pseudo-sex on the dance floor to it. It may feel good, but it don't look classy. Maybe people were drunk...they didn't know any better...Hey! I'm trying to give people the benefit of the doubt here! By the time Mind Motion was doing his set, the dance floor was crowded but not sardine-can crowded. This is the way I like it. I'm not sure if the club management was elated with the promoters though. - DJ Mauricio He was playing Salsa, Merengue & Reggaeton in the smaller room. Of what I heard, he seemed good, but I don't attend these often, so I'll leave his review for someone more fitting to do it. The room he was spinning to was fairly empty for most of the night. It was clear that most of the crowd was here for Hip-Hop. THE SERVICE It wasn't very busy. We got our drinks pronto. THE PEOPLE When we sat outside, we were right by the ashtray, so we had a lot of people approach us for a lighter or matches. When we said we didn't have any, they would stay awhile and chat. The crowd overall was really friendly. No bitchy stares at us tonight...thank you, God! Got compliments in fact! We did see someone get kicked out at around 12:30pm-ish...but it was kept low-key and kinda had a "move-along-there's-nothing-to-see-here" vibe to it. THE AMBIANCE & LAYOUT Club Cocomo is such a beautiful venue with both indoor and outdoor areas. The layout was awesome...a lot of open space, an upstairs area and more...but broken up in ways that makes sense. (Compare to: Sip Bar & Lounge on Broadway always pissed me off with its layout...big pole in the middle...L-shaped and nothing but traffic jams at that one turn. DJ is hella high up so you couldn't ask for better music that actually kept the dance floor full if you wanted to. Anyways...I digress.) I really love the venue itself and the kitchsy decor. If you find an event that you like that's being held there, you should definitely go!
by Phoebe W. on Came here for lunch on a Sunday. I would say, the experience was not memorable. I almost even forgot that we came here. This place reminded me of a steak/sushi place in Minneapolis called Seven but it is a very bad imitation of it. The decor..is not really my style. I got the sushi and did feel like it was a bit overpriced for the quality of sushi it was. The eel nagari did not taste fresh. My future mother in law got a great fish sandwich but my fiance got the special strip roll and it was such a small portion for 13 dollars. The service was fine, but I just didn't feel comfortable in the restaurant and I felt the food was a bit overpriced.
