This place has all the elements of a fun clubbing experience. great crowd, friendly bartenders, and awesome music (hop hop/house)! The crowd was pretty fun. Overall, I dig it.

Oh man, this club takes me back. Back to the time when bands had tambourine players. Back when girls with stringy hair would play their acoustic guitars and sing like Joni Mitchell on helium. Back when you had to have a bean burrito because you're stoned and felt a case of bad vibes. Compared to the likes of Slim's or even the Independent, Cafe du Nord is intimate and attracts either indie acts who are on the rise or cove bands with cult followings. I have to admit I seem to come here more for the latter than the former maybe because I get nostalgic for some of the music of my youth. Jamie W. and I were here more recently for Sing Blue Silver, a Duran Duran cover band (see photo), and an Erasure-esque, an Erasure cover band. We both liked the first band and started dancing the Reflex before I knew how geeky I must have looked. No-No-No-Notorious! Smell like I sound, I'm lost in a crowd.... and I'm hungry like the wolf! The lead singer even affected a Simon Lebon accent even though he was probably from Pinole. The less said about the other band, the better. But them's the breaks and who really cares? After all, it's a cool space with Victorian period interiors and a long hand-carved mahogany bar in front (see photo). It intentionally evokes a prohibition-era speakeasy, but it's frankly so dark down there, that level of detail doesn't get noticed much by the patrons. You may get lucky and can abscond a free bar stool, or play it safe and wear comfortable shoes. Dinner is an option I never pursued here. Anyhow, I have to go now and download me some Duran Duran on iTunes.

When I try a new restaurant, the most important thing to me is "expectations." Given that fact, two things are apparent. Top Flr is a solid restaurant and it has been grossly overrated. The space has been expanded and the decor is a vast improvement over the previous establishment. It is simple (black on white) and sparsely decorated (in a good way). The music is solid and there is a nice vibe at the place. I was a little surprised by the personal style(s) of the patrons. It seemed out of place given the "hip" atmosphere the restaurant has. There was a decent crowd for a Monday night. They had two tables upstairs, a large group at a table in the new room and one table outside. Add to that the handful of people at the bar and they were doing a pretty solid business. I was underwhelmed with the service, but not so much that I would not return. It was the bartender's first night; but given the circumstances, I think he's just not that good at what he does. He was not particularly busy and he did not spend a lot of time chatting with the customers - so I'm not sure why the service was sub-standard, but it was. I was there for at least 5 minutes before he acknowledged me, and each of my dishes sat on the service line for an extended period of time before I was served. The food was fine, though I felt my meal was about $5-$7 too expensive. I ordered a well vodka tonic, the cheese plate, and the Pappardelle with Shrimp. The cheese plate was solid. There were three cheeses which were all of reasonable quality. Some of the flavors did not work for me - but that was more my palette than anything else. I was perturbed that they nickel and dime you for the bread. It was not included with the cheese plate and the server did not inform me that it was $.75. Not a big enough charge to throw your arms up - but I felt like I was at Taco Bell and had asked for a side of sour cream. As with the main course, the price point was about $3-4 too high (it came in at eleven). My main dish was the pappardelle, shrimp, & ravioli ($14). I was confused as to why they would have a dish with pappardelle and ravioli - but oh well. On the plus side, I felt there was a good quantity of shrimp in the dish; however, there were a number of shortcomings. First and foremost, there was no Pappardelle. I am not sure how this happened, but it did. Additionally, the shrimp were not of the quality I expected given the price point. They tasted somewhere in between "frozen" and "fresh." Given how the seafood markets work - I should have known better. However, I was still bummed they couldn't get a higher quality product to me. Additionally the dish was not properly seasoned. It just so happens that there was too much garlic. It made me happy because I am a huge garlic fan; however, they should not be commended for that. Regardless of the shortcomings, the food was good enough and the vibe was solid. I would not travel more than 3 miles to eat here, but since I live close - I will return. It is certainly plausible that they just had an off night.
