by John D. on I was somehow expecting more from the Bubble Lounge. Their website portrays them as a high end type of place. I would generally say that the space is really outstanding, I like to casual couch and lounge feel. I though the service was very so-so, I ordered a Bartender's Special cocktail and was given a Skyy Screwdriver, which in a Mixologist's city like SF is not a proper bartender's pick. I also though they were woefully understaffed, I will say that we had a group of 30+ for our monthly B-School alum event but I am certain they had prior notice so I am going to fault them. I don't usually frequent places that only make 3 stars in my book, I will go there to hang but only for some tangential reason. I could be won back but it seems that many other people are rating this also a 3 so, it appears that the mean reversion may be in effect.
by Eugene H. on Went on a Saturday night. Douchbaggery on an epic scale. It's a nice room though and the doormen don't let it get crowded. Great people watching, especially the desperation outside. The crowd was 75 percent female, single dudes turned away. I had to laugh when I saw people waiting in line and elbowing and lying that it was their birthday. All for the privilege of paying a $20 cover for the privilege of buying $20 martinis and being snarled at by a bitchy coked out bartender. It's everything that sucks about the world crammed into a very nice room. I like the acrobats. Music on Sat: Bon Jovi mixed with techno beat. but hell, if someone else is paying, why not tag along?
by Lawerence Erne on according to the bouncer at the phoenix upon looking at my ID, there are no asian people in iowa and therefore he would not let me in. we had to beckon over a cop to verify its authenticity. yahoo for boston being a cosmopolitan city, right? anyhow, i was very pleased that we were not deterred because i had the most satisfying night. and many more after. in fact, there was a time when i danced at the phoenix multiple times a week! wednesdays - techno, thursday - bangin' drum n bass (elements), sundays - bumpin' house. i couldnt help myself. there has been many a rise and fall of nights and venues in boston's EDM history, but the phoenix always prevails. the space of this little irish bar is a small and lined with wooden booths. its dark but welcoming and has a decent selection of beers on tap. but undeniably the cheap cover and consistant caliber of the deejays sets the phoenix apart. i would recommend going around 10:30 or 11:00 on thursday or sunday with a pal, downing a brewsky, boppin' your head to the beat while you watch the breakers, poppers & lockers and regulars do their thing and wait until the swell or bassline of the music grabs you. i have no doubt you will blissfully sweat the night away.
