My husband and I, who rarely go on dates, or leave the Valley, for that matter, did just that. So, we got all gussied up for our 9:00 on Friday reservations. We managed to find free street parking on Spring St. The atmosphere was gorgeous: really cool vintage lighting fixtures, wrought iron work, large murals, and obscure silent films projected on a few walls. The clientele was a bunch of hipsters, and girls wearing out pretty frocks - not the goth-steampunk crowd I hoped for. But it didn't matter. Our little table afforded us a cozy couch where we could snuggle up together, and enjoy the view. There was a dj playing weird trancy-jazzy music. But it added to the mellow vibe, and wasn't too loud. We shared an order of sliders and sweet potato fries. Both were delicious, if pricey, but we expected that. My husband loved that they had Maudite on draft, his new favorite beer. I was drinking vodka. Be warned Finlandia is their well, and it is $9 a pop. We also tried some pineapple flavored absinthe from the green fairy, which was okay. I don't think I'd do that again. But they let us take the cool bottle home. By 11:30, it started getting crowded, so we left. In all, we had a great date, and we'd do it again. Though next time, I think I'd like to come with a crowd, to see what happens late night.

It's a great place to chill. Sitting outside in the patio on a warm late summer/early fall evening is a pleasure, and the drinks are strong and affordable. Best yet, they have Strongbows English Cider which I didn't know they sold in the US. The live band they had that night was pretty good too.

First Austin stop ISO the perfect French Onion Soup. It was good here, and worth going back for, but I think I'm going to continue my soup hunt. I will definitely return here though because their sandwiches are fantastic. I had ham and swiss on a croissant today. The croissant was an appropriate size and lasted all the way through my sandwich. I hate when you lose the bottom of the croissant before the sandwich is done. I appreciate proportional croissants. Although I didn't try the other sandwich my lunch buddy told me it was the best turkey sandwich he's ever had. Nice! The service is also amazing. I cannot believe how quickly my order was filled and during the start of the lunch rush no less. With five people ahead of me in line, I was in and out in less than 15 minutes with my two sandwiches and three delectable cookies.
