by Katherine N. on This place is the place to be on a Saturday night for all those who love the sultry house/trance vibe. The sound system here is amazing and I wish I had it in my car, imagine that a rave on wheels! The sound bumps and bumps and bumps like no other. Stiff drinks = Good drinks, at least in my book. But minus a point for being pricey. This place stillll brings in WORLD CLASS DJS. and if you come on THE RIGHT NIGHT you will see the trapeze girls.
by Marvin Sashington on This place gets the some of the best EDM events in Philadelphia, so it's pretty much a must for those into that scene. It makes sense that big promoters get DJs here - it's big. But it's filthy, it's overcrowded at times, and there's tons of stupid people that get absolutely smashed and just dick up your night... As other reviewers have commented - underage night is fabulous. :-) Keep in mind Friday nights are gay-themed - if that creeps you out, avoid it.
by mary r. on I am totally biased. I used to DJ here for a few years when Giday and Nebiat (owners) first opened it...well, RE-opened it. It used to be a famous jazz club and you can see photos in the hallway of Billie Holiday and other legends singing there. It got off to a slow start. The NOPNA (North of the Panhandle Neighborhood Association) douches didn't want "another" bar in the 'hood, even though there was only one, 3 blocks away. They had to work their asses off and really fight to become a "real" bar. My friend, an attorney, helped get them their liquor license (which changed EVERYTHING). Now that they have live music, a full bar and are open until 2am, this place is a real-life, full-blooded BAR. In "Popeye's Gulch" no less. Remember Chances? This place has similar clientele (neighborhoodies who just want to get their nightly drink on and don't ask for much), but is waaaay bettter...no fighting, no freakin' out, just good, velvety wallpaper and home-cooked Ethiopian food. You can also rent out the huge back room, which has couches and a pool table. Yes, the service is slow, the sound system sucks, the decor leaves a lot to be desired. But the owners are decent, proud, good-hearted people who serve up delicious food cooked with L-O-V-E. And you gotta adore the wallpaper, which has been mentioned by several others, and I'm sure is probably the same wallpaper that Billie Holiday leaned up against. If you want a comfortable place to chillax in your neighborhood, this is it, Western Additioners. No frills. Just good people and a non-pretentious atmosphere. Try the honey wine and vegetarian platter....mmmm. And for the negative reviewers: remember, this is not a five-star restaurant. It's a BAR that happens to serve Ethiopian food. If you're not expecting lightning-fast table service and a sommelier, you will probably enjoy this place. Its laid-back atmosphere is why they have such loyal customers.
