Imagine you are suddenly transported into the musical Cabaret. You are now at The Box. Half naked women twirl in hula hoops that are suspended from the ceiling, and a Sally Bowles type woman MCs a show that is both strange (cue the woman in a giant vagina costume) and impressive. The vibe is sexy and the drinks are strong. I took one star away because the bartenders were pretty rude, other than that, top notch bar.

East Side Show Room gets 3 stars for now, with the potential for 4 stars if they make a few improvements..... I was told the owner created most of the chairs and the bar herself. I give her 4 1/2 eclectic stars on the decor. The 1/2 point deduction is for comfort. The chairs and the tables look fun, neat and cool, but they are awkward to seat at, especially if you are waiting for over an hour (more later). The food is much better than average, and it is nice to have a bar in Austin that focuses on making good drinks rather than strong drinks. The posts about the dislike of Vodka are true. Our waiter told us, that "Vodka was made to get you drunk", unlike Gin. Yet, they are both hard liquors and 37 to 40% alcohol by volume. My guess, is this is their attempt to make you feel less sophisticated if you like vodka over Gin. Lucky for me, I like Gin as well, but I prefer Vodka. This leads me to the service. The wait staff was competent and friendly, but the drink issue is annoying. I am the customer, you can suggest the specialties of the house, that is nice, but ultimately let me decide what I want and don't berate me for my choice. The hostess did a very poor job of managing the seating. We were told 15 to 20 minutes and it took well over an hour. By the time a seat opened in the dinning room, it was time for the band to start. This would be great if the table wasn't next to the amplifier. I am trying to figure out the sophisticated Gin sipping east-side Austinite demographic that wants an amplifier in their ear over dinner. I like live music, but how about doing it unplugged. Especially in a very small room. This is a problem at many local restaurants, not just here. The entire experience took 3 hours. When we finally got to eat we all were starving, and as I said it was better than average. We will definitely give this place another try, but with the right expectation. P.S. If you are cabbing it from downtown, you need to make sure you have arrangements ahead of time for a cab to pick you up. There is a major shortage of cabs on the East side. If it is a weekend you will be hard pressed to get one in less than 30 - 40 minutes.
