by Francesca T. on I greatly enjoy going to The Cafe. I have went 3 times and everytime I go I always have a great time. The cover charge is great. It's only $5. Coat check is $3 could maybe be a dollar cheaper. Drinks are priced well. The DJ is great!!! And there are lounging areas where you can sit if you don't wanna dance. There is an indoor smoking area which I love and there is always staff picking and tidying up the place. The only reason I wouldn't give it 5 stars is because their website isn't up to par, it should get updated more often with previews to events they are gonna have and should be able to offer guest list (but since it's only 5 can't really beat the price). If there is half a star it would be 4 1/2 but ya. Go to The Cafe. Regardless if you are gay or straight you definitely feel comfortable there!!!!!
by Michelle L. on What the HELL happened to this club?? If this were Sept/Oct 2009, I would be rating it four stars right now, however, a lot has changed since then. Playhouse is located on the corner of Hollywood and Wilcox. The entrance looks like it leads into a dingy theater, but don't be fooled. As soon as you walk in, you will hear the bass bumpin and want to dance (they blast their music on the louder side). The venue itself is decent, but not glitzy or glamorous. It sort of reminds me of a Vanguard done right. The bathrooms are on the right before you walk into Playhouse's main room. Inside, there's a bar to the immediate right, as well as a bar in the center with a cage that a go go dancer usually bounces around in at some point in the night. Tables surround the center bar on both sides. Stairs lead down to the small dance floor, which has plush seats on both sides..VERY smart idea. At the front of the dance floor is a third bar and above it is the DJ booth. Behind the DJ booth is a medium sized LED screen (reminds me of the bigger screens at HARD events) that will display lights and different patterns in sync with the music. If you cut across the dance floor and go down a hall to the front right, you will find yourself in their outdoor "smoking section" which is nothing more than a fenced in area outside the building. Very high school dance-esque. Now, this club really drew my attention when I first discovered it six months ago at their Monday Night Social event where they feature notable house DJs. I came to check out Serge Devant on a whim ($10 entry, short wait in line) and was shocked to see how crowded the club was on a Monday night (esp with the economy) and how everyone seemed relatively young (mid to late twenties) and decent looking. All the girls were dressed up like it was Friday too, despite the almost non-existent dress code. On top of that, the music was amazing. House and tech house all night long, and everyone knew how to GROOVE. It was like a younger version of DEEP. I was won over and came back a few more times and enjoyed my visits here thoroughly... Which brings me to what happened recently. I hadn't gone to Playhouse in a while now and thought it would be a great idea to introduce it to some househead friends of mine. Upon walking in, I knew something was wrong. It was like I fell through a time machine and all the young, nice looking people had aged twenty years. The club was completely PACKED with Asians and Persians old enough to be my parents! What the hell, don't these older people have better things to do at their age than to go clubbing?? And half the people weren't drunk either, if you know what I mean. The dancing I witnessed was absolutely terrible, more like awkward jerking with large amounts of offbeat head swinging. I don't think I've ever felt so awkward and out of place at a club in my entire life DESPITE downing large quantities of (coughexpensivecough) alcohol and hearing awesome music. Seriously, if you're under forty, don't bother coming to this club on Mondays. The glory days of Monday Night Social seems to have ended.
