Ambiance Warm golden, flickering tones throughout the restaurant. We got there early but within an hour, the place started filling up quickly. It became pretty loud with chatter and reminded us of a loud or rather normal sounding steakhouse. Also, the tables are close together. There are a few skinny bookshelves placed throughout the dining room as well as a fireplace, which we requested to sit near because the restaurant is noticeably chilly. Girls, bring a jacket or dress warm. Music From the 80's Mister Mister "Broken Wings" to emo Portishead "Nobody Loves Me" to the transporting swanky tunes from one of the Hotel Costes albums, I felt that they literally were playing my Ipod. As if the food isn't good enough on its own, but my playlist playing in the background? Put a fork in me, I'm done. Whoever picked the musical selection - excellent. Bread Warm Naan wedge slices with a yogurt dipping sauce. Wine Wine Paring for $21. Goodness, what a deal. Wine 1: 2007 Pinot from Oregon - tasted much of berries. Wine 2: A crisp, cold sweet white wine. (I can't tell you the name because we don't know it ourselves. A little disappointed that we had to ask the server what the first wine was to begin with. By the time, we received the second glass we were too anxious for the entrée to ask again.) Wine 3: Port - again, don't know the kind. Starter Sweet Corn Soup with Pork Belly - A very thin, clean sweet, buttery, and nutty soup with fresh corn kernels and five small cube chunks of very tasty pork belly. I would have preferred it to be slightly thicker, but did appreciate that it took a while to finish. Doesn't look like much when the server pours it out of the carafe, but there is definitely enough soup to thoroughly enjoy. I was really hoping to taste and welcome the contrast of the apple cider to give the soup more depth, alas, it was masked by the overpowering buttery taste of the soup. Tataki of Wagyu Skirt - Decent size portion. People were raving about how big the portion was. For a high end restaurant - yes, it is generous. This starter dish was very cumbersome to eat. Very touch, chewy pieces of beef. The flavor enriched beef is what made me chew on it much longer than I would have liked. However, I simply could not swallow the chewy bits. The beef just would not break down. I came to eat the beef not chew on it like tobacco. Therefore, I probably wouldn't order this dish again. Hopefully, it was just a bit off that night. Entree Tai Snapper - Tapioca crusted snapper sitting on a square bed of rice (preprared like yaki onirigi) with broccoli rabe (which bitterness tasted similar to kale, gave a nice contrast to the dish). In Korean culture, to say that a dish reminds you of a taste that brings you back to your childhood (specifically said from my parent's generation or older) is a huge compliment since the heartfelt cooking and the beautiful rustic tastes from the previous generations just don't quite stack up to the newer, innovative, progressive generation of cooking. With that said, the first bite of this dish instantaneously transported me back to my mother's kitchen table where we would have her signature fish dish. Pan-fried battered fish with rice, of course. It was uncanny how similar it tasted that I couldn't help but reiterate this fact throughout the meal. So to me, this dish proved to be rather emotional and touching. Hats off to the chef and a huge honor for me to have tasted a fancy replica of Mom's dish. Note: This dish has been switched to the halibut instead for dineLA. (It is $33 on the regular menu.) Dessert Rootbeer Float with Chocolate Chip Cookies: A good size glass of fresh sarsaparilla. I have to admit that I enjoyed Craft's rootbeer more. Chocolate chip cookies - is my sister baking for Michael Mina? (Tasted just like my sister's chocolate chip cookies which are baked from scratch.) Dark Chocolate Coffee crème cake with Coconut Sorbet and Crunch Peanut: All the different tastes of the dessert blended together very well. I thought that this dish would be a bit sharper considering it's comprised of very distinct flavors of coconut and dark chocolate, etc. But it turned out to be a very mild and subtle dessert. I really can't say that I've had a lot of impressionable and moving experiences taken place at restaurants, but it happened on the 15th at XIV. I felt like I was at home, listening to my playlist and eating with the family. I don't know how he does it, but Michael Mina not only knows how to cook "like a boss" but he was able to pull on the heartstrings and capture the taste buds of a young Korean girl growing up in Pennsylvania eating her mom's food. Forever Pwned. Peep the pix. Parking - Private lot with mandatory valet parking of $10. Street metered parking (which will be hard to find). Location - on the corner and across the street from Chase Bank, El Pollo Loco

This 'diner' has serious identity issues. First it was Mediterranean, then it lit up signs that it was an all night diner, then it advertised (with neon lights out front) that it has European desserts and coffee. The food itself was actually okay. I had a gyro, but it didn't have any of the typical gyro sauce on it. No sauce at all. I ordered a cranberry martini since they had drink specials, but I couldn't even taste the alcohol. This is supposed to be a martini people! I ordered one more and asked for less cranberry and more alcohol and what I got was less cranberry and the bartender added water. This may be a good place to go when you are leaving the bars at 3am, but I would not recommend anyone go there sober.

I met two friends here for drinks late on a Wednesday evening. I was surprised how busy it was - it's clearly popular - not sure why. Mediocre attempt at "Ye Olde English Pub" atmosphere and location isn't great, especially if you sit outside. It's located in a strip mall right off noisy and busy 183. Pretty much everyone who was sitting outside was there because they smoke (cigarettes or "other") so definitely not a place for people who like clean air to breathe. Drinks were actually not bad - it's the only place I know of with Woodchuck Pear Cider on tap. My two companions got three (yes, three) frozen cosmos in a row to share - they really liked them. We also got spinach and artichoke dip, which was bland. The main reason I'm upping to three stars is because the waitress was very cool and from my seat I could watch some drag queens flip their long blonde hair (wigs?) and flirt with the guys that walked by. The flirted-at guys tended to look intrigued but dubious - why is that gorgeous very tall woman making eyes at me? Flattering, but somewhat suspicious... Fun!
