by Chris C. on Took a date here for dinner on a Friday night. First had drinks at the bar, which were good and fairly priced, and we were even able to find seats at the bar. For dinner, the date and I shared 4 small plates: hang steak, halibut, shrimp, and broccolini (sp?), then shaed 2 desserts: rose water ice cream and rasberry & lemon cake. Again, everything was quite good. Service was competent. No real complaints. However, nothing was that outstanding. I realize this is SF, but for a $150 meal, I expected more. The place was quite loud and hard to hold a conversation across the table. Good for larger parties but not so great for dates. Good mix of older and younger people.

Don't come here on a weekend night if you are in a hurry to get in and get out, or expect to find parking immediately. We had to park on a side street. Get a beer order from the bar and stand around 45-60 minutes with the crowd until your table is ready. The new restaurant better accomodates the crowds, but the blue collar ambiance of the old tavern is gone. I reviewed Six Feet Under before and I am editing my review to show that the food deserves five stars, after a misstep our first visit. We have had great luck with the scallops and grits, shrimp and scallops platter, and fish stew, a southern version of Thai Tom Yum soup. Ambiance in the new restaurant on Memorial Drive, though enjoyable, is LOUD because of the acoustics.
