Douchebag central and an over-crowded and lame scene. This was my first impression of Mezzanine when I saw Travis Barker and DJ AM back in 2005 or 2006. I'm going to suck it up and actually give Mezzanine a good review. I've been to a few shows here recently (Junior Boys, Dan Deacon) and the place is pretty solid. For one, the staff have been consistently nice; the door guys aren't dicks, the security aren't cro-mags looking to boot out whoever they can and the coat check ladies are affable. Everything is pretty easy to find; bathroom, bar, coat check, etc. Though it's not the most savory part of town, the place is accessible by Powell Street Muni train in addition to cab. It may feel a little cramped for some but I think the views are pretty good from everywhere in place and thankfully they don't pack the place so full that you're dying or permanently stuck in some crappy corner. Oh and god bless the cocktail waitress who somehow manages to plow through the crowd, take drink orders and quickly and accurately return with the goods. You get an A+. Probably the only bad part is the price discrimination on drinks (either that or the bartenders are pulling a fast one). A well vodka tonic was $7 on Tuesdays and $6 on the weekends. I know not everyone drinks on the weekdays but don't try to take advantage of those of us who do. Tickets for shows are usually priced very fairly, just make sure you get 'em before they sell out!

I may have been here on an off night, because the music was just alright, but not the funnest club experience I've ever had. The night was definitely salvaged by witnessing a pretty ridiculous sloppy drunk PDA scene in the middle of the place, it garnered a bunch of weird looks and some light hearted laughs. I would definitely go back for a show or a different DJ, as the sound system looks like it could cause serious inner ear damage, and I'm down with that.
