I hope it's ok to post a review when we only had drinks here. But I was surprised with the lower rating so I wanted to throw my two cents in. This place is so pretty. Unique decor, candles, an old movie being projected up on the wall, paper lanterns, swanky old skool music, black and white striped tent with homemade lanterns on the patio...the atmosphere is very intimate, elegant you could get away with a group of friends going here too. You know they don't fool around when it comes to drinks when they list the name of the head bartender/drinkist on the menu. All the cocktails were very interesting, many of them included absinthe, most of them different types gin. I will make it a point to return to try them all. I had the violet one which tasted like nothing else I can compare to, but it was refreshing. My date got one with absinthe that tasted like bendryl cough syrup to me. But he liked it - anise is just not my cup of tea. If a $10 cocktail just isn't your thing, luckily you can grab a pilsner for $2. The menu looked incredible, I believe it changes frequently. I was most impressed by the listing of where they got all their produce and meat from. Unfortunately we could only afford either a round of cocktails here, or dinner, just not both, so we had to move on. I would like to save up and visit again however, because given the atmosphere here and the quality, I feel it would be worth it.

I have no idea how I've been on rateclubs this long and not written this. If you are not into industrial, powernoize, electro, EBM, or related genres of music, this is probably not for you. Unless you're up for broadening your insipid indie emo pop tastes. If you are going to freak out because OMG THERE ARE GOTH PEOPLE THERE and your tiny pea brain can't take it, this is probably not for you, either, unless you're the type who appreciates all manner of self-expression. If you are going to stand around and complain because you had to pay a $10 cover on a Friday night, then maybe you shouldn't go. BUT. If you want to have your brain blown by some of the best DJs playing the best shit this scene has to offer, if you want to meet new people who don't suck and have an otherwise really great time, and if you're into new experiences, new things, and stuff that goes boom, hiss, clang, whack, and zzzzz, well, then step right up. Hosted, these days, by Jewel's Catch One, one of the oldest gay discos in Los Angeles (going strong since 1982, I think), two floors, three rooms, and three bars' worth of fun is housed in this nondescript building in an admittedly dodgy neighborhood. Park in the lot or out on Pico and walk - don't park on the sidestreets, stay under the streetlamps on the main thoroughfare, trust me on that.  Jewel does a lovely job of hosting our black-clad asses. The security staff don't suck, the bartenders rock, the drink prices are reasonable, and the people, for the most part, are not douchebags. We're all nice and friendly and fun to be around until you start trashing our house; if you are an asshat, the clientele will toss your ass faster than security will, we promise. This is not some shiny ritzy Hollywood glitter palace. This place is rough around the edges, as it should be, and we like it that way.  This is our Cheers. I have been to industrial-music clubs and shows in San Francisco, Seattle, New York, San Diego, and London. I am here to tell you that not a single one holds a candle to what we have right here in Los Angeles. There is nowhere else, at least in this country, that has such a vibrant, vital industrial music scene, and can support a club like this on a weekly basis. We are spoiled brats, frankly, to have it, and the complainers can go to the freaking Vanguard or some shit for all I care. Be grateful, sinners. Be fucking grateful.
