Swanky, jazzy, and they make one hell of a Long Island! Folks, before I say anything else, MAKE A RESERVAtiON IF YOU WANT TO BRING A GROUP! Ok, enough of the disclaimers, let's get to the happy hour! Was here for Lisa K.'s birthday for an evening of schloshing and good times. The look and feel of the place is dark, jazzy and almost elite (you too will feel like a mob boss if you are in one of those big leather chairs). Happy hour prices are not too bad (but then again, their prices at happy hour are the the top shelf prices at other bars), and the food is good to eat. I highly recommend grabbing a good handful of the Kobe beef sliders with sweet potato fries. If you can, double fist the burgers and then do the same for the drink. Drink selection is rather formidable for varieties of alcohol (oh multitudes of gin, tequila and scotch, how I love thee) but they can't make AMF or LA water (minus 1 star... sorry... but I gotta). Ambiance is quite nice and is great for a small group or an upscale but casual date (fellas, pay attention here ok?). Service is fast and courteous and even though they couldn't make all the drinks we wanted, they were happy to oblige all of our other requests and were receptive to any suggestions that our group made. If you feel like a night out with some close friends and don't mind dressing up, walk down the dark alleyway and down the stairs to The Edison.

I had my 30th birthday here. We had bottle service and 2 cabanas for about 30 guests. Everything was arranged with Veronica and everything went extremely well. This is a GREAT place to have an event and all my guests had a great time. I had a pretty mixed crowd -- some didn't want to be around loud music, some love dancing, etc, so the cabanas were perfect for everyone. Those that wanted to dance went inside and came out to cool down. The others wanted to socialize and stayed outside and talked and met new people in that area. Time flew. We got there at 11pm and I wished we had come in a bit earlier .. 1030 or even 10. So why the  4 stars instead of 5 (I'd give 4.5 stars out of 5 if I could)? When I got to the club, the VIP host informed me they didn't have a guest list for me, just that 30 people could mention my name and get in. I spent a decent amount of time getting the list together and making sure everyone's names matched their IDs, etc., and that was a huge waste of time considering the outcome. Our waitress (Kerrilee) was cute, friendly and attentive. Overall, a great place, and I will plan more parties here. We had just finished a massive meal at Mastro's before coming, so I didn't try the fondue or tacos, but based on the crowds around them, they are probably very good.

I experienced an internal conflict with my approach for this review of Tao. As a place to meet for drinks, Tao is a visually-stunning destination with a chic atmosphere and dramatic interior. The lounge area can get crowded, but it's a lively, energetic, and aesthetically attractive crowd (I've been waiting all week to use the word aesthetic in a sentence haha). The bartenders certainly know how to make a drink (as they should at $15+ a glass!). Therefore, as a lounge, I would give Tao a 4 star review. However, I feel the quality of Tao as a restaurant has fallen off a bit, as I was disappointed with the food and service of late. Specifically, I used to enjoy the Wasabi Crusted Filet Mignon, but the last time I had it I was uninspired. I'm not sure if it's Tao or if it's me, but something changed. For a Filet Mignon, the meat was tough while emanating a dull taste. The tempura onion rings, while good, did not provide much of a compliment to the wasabi crusted meat. The sashimi and rolls served at Tao were good, not great. I suggest the angry dragon roll. The service at Tao has always been so-so, bu I do realize I have to keep things in perspective and that we (my party) choose to dine at Tao for reasons other that the service haha. However, the reservation staff desperately needs to be upgraded, for the past two times dining at Tao, I've had to wait at least 30 minutes to be seated (and, judging from other rateclubs reviews, I'm not the only one complaining). I'm not sure if Tao does that by design, but I would believe that an inefficient reservation system would have a negative marketing appeal for Tao, no matter how impressive the Buddha statue is. Since Tao is probably known more as a restaurant than as a lounge, I ended up putting more emphasis for my rating of Tao from the point of view of the whole dining experience. I'm not sure if I'll come back to dine at Tao, but I wouldn't mind meeting for a drink or two on a weekday night.
