Another hit off the Dine LA menu. I was a bit hesitant in trying this place because the reviews definitely don't do it justice but I had a great time at XIV and definitely plan on being back. I noticed that some of the items from the Dine LA menu were not on their regular menu so the next time I come I may try their tasting menu. I came here with a friend for dinner on a busy Thursday night. We were seated promptly as we had a 7:45 reservation. After looking at the menu we decided on getting one Dine LA 3-course meal and then order from the regular menu. Decor: They strive to make it a comfortable atmosphere and I think it hit the spot. The tables and chairs are quite fancy but very comfortable and resemble dining in the formal dining room of a grand estate. The lighting is dim and the crowd is gorgeous. Overall a hot date spot but still a fun place to hang out with friends. Appetizers: Tuna Tartare - They bring you a plate and mix it up at your table. It is served with ancho chile, pears, pine nuts, and sesame oil. I thought it was good, but not the best tartare I've had. Summer Truffle Cavatelli - was the best thing I've eaten for quite some time. Cavatelli is some kind of pasta that resembles a silk worm, but it is delicious and hearty: served with Castelmagno Cheese, Ciolet Artichokes, Sylvetta and white truffle oil. The flavoring was perfection. I wish they had a larger portion because I could eat it all day for a meal. Entrees: Braised Lamb Tajine - was wonderful! The huge lamb portion was served atop cous cous, dates, saffron tomato broth and it was full flavored. The plating was impressive and they brought i out in a covering with a lid so when they took off the lid you were instantly greeted with the aromatic presence of the lamb and saffron. It was a great entree and a huge portion. If you go, please do get this! Scallops - just some plain old bay scallops. Not impressed. Slightly overcooked. Small portion. We also ordered a side of Jalapeño Creamed Corn but by the time we were done with our entrees it still did not come so we asked our server about it and they returned to apologize for their mistake and offered us a free dessert in place of forgotten side dish. Which leads me to desserts... Desserts: Root beer float - don't get tricked. This is just a root beer float with a chocolate chip cookie on the side. Probably cost a total of $1 to make. The sarsaparilla is a little different than using actual Root Beer so the flavor is a little different but it is by no means impressive. Mystery prize dessert - after forgetting our side dish they offered a dessert in place of their mistake and asked if there was something in particular we wanted or if we would like to be surprised, I immediately blurped out "Surprise us!" and so they did. 2 minutes later we were brought an amazing hazelnut dessert. And when I say amazing, I mean, this is what put them at 5 stars. The hazelnut dessert was everything hazelnut from beginning to end. They had a hazelnut chocolate with hazelnut mousse, with some hazelnut sponge cake (flourless nonetheless). It was the most delectable dessert I have ever consumed (unfortunately it is not on their regular menu nor did they give me a name to know how to order it again). But this just goes to show the caliber of the chefs. I am a fan of XIV and will definitely be back soon.

Avalon isn't always an amazing experience, but as far as location and set up go, it's about as good as it gets. The DJs that play here are world class, and there is always a decent dance party, it's just 100% reliant on what kind of crowd shows up on any given night. If you are looking for a place to party/dance with a group of friends, you really can't beat Avalon, because then you are the crowd. If you are just looking to meet new people, it's a hit or miss at this place. I generally go for the musical talent and I'm rarely disappointed. Cover is usually discounted if you RSVP a day or more in advance. The drinks aren't cheap, but they aren't overpriced either. They have lots to look at in terms of video screens, lights, stage setup, and performance. Check it out on FRIDAY for the best dance party!

Who doesn't love a good burger? Well, the Chik-Fil-A cows and vegetarians might not, but aside from them; those of us that do...are always in search of a great burger. Flip is an interesting concept; Burger Boutique.... hmmm... really? Should burgers be presented with such prestige? Chef Richard Blais has created a spot on, yet innovative approach to the "Old American favorite" I didn't know what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by the offerings. The decor is very modern; like you walked into a futuristic "Malt Shop". My only concern is how clean they can keep the gleaming white walls, tables and bar stools over a long period of time.... As I looked around at the other patrons partaking, I thought to myself. "is this going to be enough, those burgers look pretty small", but I enjoyed the Butcher Cut with blue cheese, red wine jam, frisee lettuce and caramelized onions. My lunch companion ordered the Southern Fried Burger, (pimiento cheese and pickles) we decided to try the Sweet Potato Tater Tots and Regular Fries (which are dusted with what reminded me of "Hot Fries" seasoning). Everything was yummy to the last bite, and I didn't feel deprived or stuffed. I love how the old saying "my eyes were bigger than my stomach" did not utter from my mouth; even after I shared the nutella and marshmallow milk shake (wow-e-katz) that was good. My only complaint would be the $3.50-$4.50 charge for the fries and sweet potato tots. I think it is a little excessive. The burgers are reasonably priced, but I cant say the same for the sides. I will definitely go back , and suggest you try it out!
