by Justin G. on Were it not for Revolution Rock Bar stinkin up the the joint, I would say that RISE is the worst club in Boston. More so...I only wish that I could say that the lack of alcohol is what influenced my opinion. The cover is always outrageously high. Twice I've had to pay twenty dollars to get in. Which given it's exclusivity as "the only after hours in Boston," you wouldn't think to be so bad. The problem is that you don't get any value out of that money. If you have a hard time finding Rise amongst the looming giants of downtown buildings don't worry. All you need to do is look for a kid in an American Eagle button down shirt throwing up against the side of the building as his friends plead to the bouncer to let him anyways. The bouncer while unsympathetic anyways won't be able to confirm or deny this request as he is too busy yelling at an underage girl who is clearly using her friend's ID while trying to pay with a credit card that has a different name on it. Should this not dissuade you than congratulations. You've passed a stress test that most reasonable people wouldn't be able to endure. Once inside it's a totally different environment. Well kind of...I mean there is fog machine mist illuminated by neon lights that provide just the kind of atmosphere you would have thought was cool at a junior high school Halloween party that you parents let you through in their basement. More so both are chaperoned by stern looking adults with hollow eyes from reality setting in as to where they work every time they see a Varsity jacket from a high school on the north shore. If all of this visual stimuli wasn't enough to shock you into going to bed then the plastic beat techno, that I'm almost certain is just an eight second loop that never seems to resolve it's self, definitely should. There are at least a couple dozen reasons not to go to RISE. So let me just summarize with reasons why you might like it. Remember that scene in Dazed and Confused where the sleazy guy was all like "I like high school girls because I keep getting older, and they stay the same age." There are plenty of barely eighteen year old girls here that are sure to be all impressed with you having your own apartment. Or at least your own basement in your parents house. If you are trying to force yourself into self-actualization and realize that you live in Boston(Great City, lousy last call), and not in New York, come here. If you don't want to drink alcohol, but want to run up a tab just as expensive on candy and redbull(which they seriously sell, candy...come on), than come on down to Rise! Listen, it's 2am...get some late night food at South St Diner, Chinatown, the North End, Ozama's in Allston, Hi-Fi in Central. Don't go to RISE. You know you owe yourself better.
by Donald Paasch on So in the past I went to Jewel's Catch nightclub, not knowing that by having fun I was helping the Village Health Foundation which was started by Jewel an activist in the community. The proceeds from the nightclub go to help maintain the services of the Village Health Foundation services which are located right by the nightclub, actually the cafe is in the same building. They provide accupunture, yoga classes, massage therapy and other services and NEVER turn anyone away for lack of funds! Its an amazing sevice! They additionally have a vegan cafe and I must say even if you are not vegan or have never considered it you must check it out! I personally thought the food was GREAT!! I especially LOVED the vegan chocolate cake!!! Delicious!!
by Eric H. on A great place to see a show, for sure (if you get close to the stage). Their selection of bands and DJs and acts is awesome: something for everyone in any given month. My recommendation is to check out the concert calendar on their website; they have bios and links to band (or whatever) websites to find out more info on any of the shows. It's a really good way to find out about some new music or writer (when they have readings) that you've never heard of. And then you'll have the immediate opportunity to see them en vivo! in this intimate venue. But beyond the music, the front room has a great vibe, great old, wooden and deep red upholstered furniture (just in style, they are not worn).. really some throwback - as some of the other reviewers have mentioned - to a 1930's establishment (or, at least, what I image one to be - I'm not even 30 myself.. haha). You can find some nice nooks in the front room to enjoy your drink (and the music - from afar, and without view of the stage - if you wish). They are known for their mojitos, muddling the fresh mint in your glass before pouring in a nice bit of rum. They may have other speciality drinks; be sure to ask! Their beer selection is fine, some local stuff and an odd cider? called Baby Cham: it tastes a bit like defizzed champagne. Yeah, so get your butt to http://cafedunord.comright now!
