Dining Date: 4/14/10 I head straight for the bar at XIV and order a Caipirinha ($15) with Sagatiba Cachaca Rum with my choice of guava or pineapple, I choose guava. I enjoy my drink but if I'd ordered it on the Terrace instead it would have been 50% off. A few others join me as we wait for everyone to arrive for dinner. A few warm pieces of pita bread with a yogurt and feta dip are brought out. Everyone gets their own serving. The bread has a sweet aroma and a drizzle of oil. We are here for the 6 course tasting menu ($40). Course 1 Ahi Tuna Tartare, Ancho Chile, Pears, Mint, Pine Nuts, Sesame Oil. This is a nice light appetizer. I enjoy the firm texture of the tuna in my mouth. The ingredients sound strong but the tartare is very lightly dressed. Course 2 XIV Caesar, Classic Dressing, Shaved Parmesan Reggiano, White Anchovy. This is easily the worst dish of the night. Completely underdressed and horribly bland. Tastes like iceberg lettuce with a crouton on top. Course 3 Tai Snapper, Tapioca-Crusted, Broccoli Rabe, White Soy Vinaigrette. This is my favorite dish of the evening. The delicate crust on the tai snapper is wonderful. There's a tiny rice cake underneath it all . Course 4 Jidori Chicken "Tajine", Vadouvan, Baby Carrot, Fennel, Petit Cilantro. The chicken is tender but the sauce is flat and uninspired. I still have not had a Jidori chicken that has made me swoon. Course 5 Grilled American Wagyu Skirt, Moroccan Spiced Vegetables. This is a crowd pleaser. Medium rare meat with a flavorful marinade. Course 6 Passion Fruit Panna Cotta, Mandarin, Yuzu, Lemongrass. This is one of my favorite non-chocolate dishes ever. The panna cotta is velvety smooth. The citrus in this dish is refreshing. And the complex flavors kept me completely entranced until the very last bite. Drinks cost me $17.50. Dinner cost $53. Valet cost $10.

Came here for a hotel party on New Years and got kicked out. They want to charge 20 bucks a head with a maximum of 4 guests after 1:00 and the staff is real rude about it. Beds and rooms are trash for the price and I don't care if Jimi Hendrix stayed here this place is an overpriced dump trying to be something it's not. They also have a minimum 2 night stay for new years to get you for another 300 bucks. What a bunch of bullshit. Thankfully I didn't pay (well I chipped in 30 bucks) but I won't be back to this place anytime soon.

Need a place in Atlanta to get your sweaty-funky-grind on? Oh, yes. This is your place. At least on the Saturday night I was there, pounded into hip hop submission by the DJ from Public Enemy, standing against the walls was not allowed. Hats came off. Suspenders came down. Shoes? Optional. (But watch for broken glass.) No one left until the last song -- which happened to be Metallica... Made me laugh out loud; the DJ definitely knew how to clear a room. I left so happy that I bought 3am Krispy Kremes for random strangers. It is that good. Just don't get there before midnight.
