So, after a fabulous dinner at Salt House, the plus one and I downed a couple of red bulls and walked a short distance under the freeway to Temple. The decor, at first glance, made me think that this was merely a lower budget version of Tao in Las Vegas, but turns out that not only are there multiple rooms and levels with something for everyone, there's also an amazing abundance of places to just chill out and people watch, which they DON'T have at Tao (unless you're in the VIP). And that makes all the difference. In a past life, I used to work at clubs in San Francisco, so I have extremely low expectations (i.e. someone getting a hand job in the stairway or elevator would barely warrant a raised eyebrow from me) - but what impressed me way more than the music (which was awesome, by the way) was how much fun everyone was having, whether that was crowding the DJ, or dance circles or what have you. Despite the fact that we were all probably under the influence of something or other, everyone seemed able to handle it, and i didn't see one fight that night. Like I said, low expectations. Mine were pleasantly exceeded. It was a work day and we're old, so we cut out around midnight, but this was the perfect way to work off that dinner!

Oh, The Park; I've always turned to it whenever family was in town and we needed someplace slightly swanky to go to brunch in Manhattan, and which was easily accessible. Well, it's now officially broken my heart. Please do not go here during the week unless you actually like hanging out with Jersey-livin' homophobic, transphobic yuppies. The atmosphere was toxic and it resembled the worst kind of yuppie bar that I could think of; the reason I avoid most bars on the east side in the 50s. Also, please don't ask me if I want water and then bring me some reverse-osmosis-bottled-in-the-store stuff. Really, I will never go back there, and I'm embarrassed to have brought my friends there.

Go. If you've never been, go. The owners are some of the sweetest people I have ever met. The food (get the spicy chicken and the all-you-can-eat vegetarian) is delicious and authentic. The honey wine is to get buzzed for. The atmosphere is funky and real, definitely not swanky or pretentious. The people who come here tend to be friendly and interesting. Yes, even for San Francisco. I almost gave it four stars because the ambience can be different at different times. If the place is packed and the game is on up front and there's a party shooting pool in back, it can be a little loud. If, however, it's comfortably filled (which it usually is) then it's a great place to go with friends or on a casual date. It's not a fine dining experience, and that's not what it's meant to be. It's got local artists' work hanging on the walls, slightly funky tables and chairs, and an indescribable feel that to those of us Waziema loyalists feels like home. When I lived in the city I ate here every Friday. It's one of those little neighborhood gems that I miss. Great food, people, price. Authentic Eritrean food at an amazing price.
