I have mixed feelings about this place. If I could describe it in one word, it'd be eclectic. They have a little of everything. Even the crowd is mixed. It's overall a really chill environment, usually crowded, and has a dance floor, bar, pool tables, games, etc so there's something for everyone. A lot of people like to have birthdays here because it's ideal for huge groups. But what sucks is the cover charge which is totally unnecessary for this type of place. I think what makes or breaks the night is the crowd you come with. If you're here with some good friends who like to have fun, you'll have a good time. But if you like the classier trendier Hollywood scene, this place is not for you.

"What's Old is New Again" is written underneath the sign of the revamped Silk City Diner, and the slogan could not be a more perfect fit. We ate in the lounge early on a Saturday evening, and the space is the same as when I was there as a minor 10 years or so ago, but the feel could not be more different. Silk has become hip, with a beer list and menu that's worth the trip. We ate exclusively off the specials menu. Started by splitting two massive perogies filled with cauliflower, shorts ribs and horseradish. The perogie was excellent, but could have used a little more short ribs, but the ribs and subtle horseradish flavor permeated the entire filling. They were served with some roasted beets, caramelized onions and arugula which were all excellent and brought the flavor of the dish together well. For dinner we split a fish special and the fig, goat cheese, caramelized onion, and arugula flat bread. The flat bread had an excellent crust, that was crunch and not doughy at all. As for the topping it was certainly nothing out of the box, but the flavors are paired together classically for a reason. As for the fish, the fish itself was well cooked with a nice crunch to the fish skin. It was served with a sweet potato puree and edamame which was a little to sweet but still tasty. The dish also had lobster ravioli (exact same dough and size as the perogies) and the filling was light and the lobster inside was over cooked and lacked flavor. For desert we had the banana-chocolate bread pudding which was one of the most satisfying things i've had for desert recently. (we split one serving and if it hadn't been so good we wouldn't have finsihed, the portion was HUGE). As for drinks, they had Bell's Two Hearted Ale on tap, which for me means I don't experiment with the beer list. My wife had two glasses of wine after which she pronounced she would not get wine again if we ever came back. In terms of price I can understand people's complaints that it is overpriced, especially in comparison to other restaurants in its class in the city. Our meal (which was 2 apps, 1 entree, 1 dessert, 4 drinks) was about $80 after tax and tip. Silk City is not where to go for a new gastro experience, but if you want some good beer, good comfort food, and a hip atmosphere its worth checking out.
