by Frank R. on I was explaining to my date that I learned a new way to fillet fish over the past weekend on a fishing trip. While it was interesting, the new technique had the potential to leave in a few pin bones if it was not done with a great deal of attention. We then discussed how finding a bone in a piece of fish is a complete turn off and can make the most delicious dish repulsive. I ordered the miso cod for the entree. From the first bite, I did not enjoy the dish as much as the earlier courses. I felt the miso was too gummy on the outside and the mustard sauce on the bottom of the plate was much too subdued. Then, when I didn't think it could get much worse, I found a bone. Another bite, another bone. After the third bone, I couldn't take another bite. It might seem trivial to some people, but there is absolutely no excuse for this at a restaurant that specializes in fish and is so revered. While this would have made my Morimoto experience a one time deal, the manager turned it in to a "I can't wait to come back" experience. Completely professional and courteous and did everything in his power to make me satisfied. I was thoroughly satisfied with the way he handled a very negative experience. Despite all this, the food here was incredible. We had the hamachi appetizer, oh-toro, 10-hour pork belly, soba carbonara, steamed sea bass and miso cod. The hamachi was so fragile, it was hard to pick up with chopsticks. The translucent slice of jalapeno and the sauce were perfect compliments. The oh-toro was so fatty that it was almost white. I have never seen anything like it before! The texture was like mousse and in contention for the best piece of fish I ever ate. The pork belly was not as tender as I would have liked, but the flavors were excellent. The rice porridge provided an interesting texture to enjoy with the pork. The soba carbonara had copious amounts of white truffle on it and was very pleasing to the nose. It was quite creamy and well constructed. The black bean sauce on the steamed bass was outstanding. I really enjoyed that dish! I felt the portion sizes were too big. I prefer small portions so you can try multiple dishes. Maybe if the portion sizes went down, so too would the cost. I really didn't mind the cost too much, though, because the food (except for the cod) was outstanding. Stay away from the drinks. They are completely over priced. For example, a bottle of Morimoto's beers sell for $22 at the restaurant, but you can buy them for about $6 elsewhere. The soba ale is delicious but not $22 delicious.
by Lanny Firoozbakht on I really want to give this place a better review, because it's close to home, has cool decor, and is in the building that's the tip of the spear where Gateway and Pico meet, which gives it a nice railway apartment feel. Also, great selection of music. But I've given it a couple chances now, and it's not getting any better. The beer tastes like the taps haven't been flushed in a long time and the food is just OK. What puts it in the do-not-return pile, however, is the service. The waitresses don't waitress. They sit at the bar and shriek at the bartender while he tries to make phone calls. The grill closed early, and then the staff began doing final clean up two hours before last call. (They ended up closing a half-hour before the time marked on the door, and were trying to nudge us out before that.) Yeah, I know: slow night. It happens. But if you don't want people to come to your place... well, then they won't.
