Went here last night for a beer. This is the first time I've been sober enough to write a review about it. The owner is great. She gave us a dollar to put on more music since the jukebox skipped one of our songs. She was also pretty funny about it - it's an old thing. The wallpaper is velvet red pineapples... makes ou feel like you are in the Chocolate Factory with Willy Wonka. There are pool tabels in the back and they have a pretty good selection of beers. I have yet to eat here but I hear the food is good so next time it's on!

this used to be a great little low key secret hide-away, but went the week after their "time out review" and couldn't find a place to sit. still, it's worth watching the sun set with a bucket of beer on the top tier above the pier. favorites are turntables on the hudson (summer fridays) or swiss day.

Jake's isn't the best sports bar in the city. It doesn't have the best food, or the best atmosphere, or the best of... anything, really. So why I did I grant a four-star review to this wood-flavored watering hole on 81st and Amsterdam? Because it's just a fun place to hang out. Mixin' it up with locals, young professionals, and grad students from the various city univerisities, this place has about a dozen beers on tap, twice that amount on the bottle, and one of the best happy hour deals in the city: 1/2 off everything in the bar before 8, everyday of the week. That means $6.50 pitchers of domestic, $9 pitchers of premium brew. Now THAT'S a deal. For those who need a little divergence whilst tippling, there are two beer pong tables, a foosball table, pool, darts, and some TV's featuring sports. The musty backroom is filled with books and leather couches, perfect for a quieter time than the often-rambunctious front room, while a secret, second bar is available for rent downstairs. Come here for a party, with some friends, or a date (make sure she's into the scene); you won't be disappointed. BEER SELECTION: Solid. About a dozen or so beers, with local and microbrews staggered amidst the typical Bud-Coors-Miller set. FOOD: Meh. Typical pub food. It won't kill you, but the wings across the street at McAleer's are better. SERVICE: No flashy bartender tricks, but the staff knows how to make a mixed drink and also will pour beer to your specification (I like a lot of head: insert joke [here]). Heads up: though Sam Adams and Goose Island are "domestics", they are priced "premium" because of the cost of the keg. Don't get into an argument with the bartender about it; they've heard it all.
