my fiancee and i came in on my birthday around 9pm because i wanted sushi and we thought we'd try a new place. i wasn't sure when we walked in as it's layout and design was pretty trendy but we sat down at the bar anyway. the bar is translucent with neon blue/purple inside. it was a nice color and never blinding and i quickly warmed to the decor. we were immediately greeted by the bartender, jamie, who was cheery and kind. we were in no hurry and planned to stay a few hours, eat happy hour sushi, and have a few drinks. she was cool to let us take in everything as we went over the drink menu to be sure we'd made the right decision. we had. my lady ordered a chocolate martini, if i recall, and i had an asahi black beer. we had a few more and as the night progressed we learned a bit about jamie and the other bartender, lance. they treated us very well and we enjoyed talking with them. when happy hour came at 10, we ordered from that menu, plus a couple of bar chi's signature rolls. we're kind of snobby when it comes to sushi, having lived in hawaii where it is cheap and great, and we are often disappointed with sushi in austin, but bar chi's combinations of both traditional and new dishes were impeccably crafted with very fresh fish. by now the place was very busy and the dj had started cranking 80's tunes. he let us tip him and he played a few songs that we both liked when we were kids. the owner said hello and he and i spoke for a couple minutes. we were getting a little loaded and my girl danced for a few minutes when the dj played billy idol for her. then a manager came over and offered to buy a round in celebration of my birthday. what fun! our tab was incredibly reasonable for what we ate and drank. we closed the place down and took a cab home. thanks for the great birthday, bar chi! we wish you all great success always.

I actually liked the thicker meat and the crunchier bread in my cheesesteak better than Pat's. But the onions were barely cooked. Overall the sandwich was better, probably because we asked for provolone instead of cheese wiz too... Now where Geno's loses all the stars I could give him is the xenophobic crap on the windows. I completely understand the memorial for Philly cops and firefighters killed in the line of duty but "Order in English, this is America" is really douchy.

What a great venue - the dance floor is spacious, there's an upstairs with comfy seats and a great stage. We saw Mark Farina here last nite and it was a lot of fun! The drinks were expensive - $8 cocktails, but they definitely give you a good amount of alcohol! The bathroom was also really nice - it's big and clean and I never had to wait in line.
