by Terrilyn Barrs on Rang in the new year with good company here at Jillian's. The line to get in moved quickly as the bouncers checked ID's and tickets efficiently. Good place to hold a private party with the huge dance floor and billiards back room for people to chill when it got too hot. Only wished they had more bartenders working...maybe it would have sped up my 30 minute wait. Although, as I was standing there, one of the bartenders put $65 in front of me...she must have mistaken me for another girl waiting for her change (all asians DO look alike?!). So I left it there for the 30 mins I was trying to wave down a bartender...no one came. SO ordered...tab was $80 after tip...used that 65 dollahs and boo yah - $15 for 10 shots/mixed drinks. Talk about a come up! Let's only hope the rest of the year brings me some luck too. Three stars for the service at the venue. But FIVE stars for the party itself - bring it on 2009...I'M READY!
by Vicki M. on Sisters is downright scary. I apparently look like an incredibly girly straight girl and I'm guessing my regular (gay) male bar companion must look like my boyfriend, because we have been on the receiving end of some of the nastiest glares in the place. There are some....fierce women at Sisters. As in, if you wear chapstick, you're a little too femme for these gals. Granted, the treatment we received could have been because we looked completely uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the only way I would have felt comfy is if we had packed our switchblades and steel toed boots. Instead, we were obviously that one thing that was not like the others. The whole crowd seems to buy into the "bi = bad idea" bullshit, and I don't think I will ever feel comfortable in there, nor will I ever have a good time in the place because of it. Ick. I'm sorry I'm not fitting into the same tired lesbian stereotypes and I'm bisexual, not gay. It's a shame, because Sisters is the only real lesbian bar in the city. (I mean, unless you count The Breakfast Club, an underground pseudo-speakeasy around 19th & Susquehanna. No thanks.) After spending many, many hours at other bars in the Gayborhood, I'm thinking gay/bisexual men have it a bit easier in the bars. I've gone to the clubs with gay/bi/straight men and have never encountered the same issues when with male friends at gay male bars. Their mixed drinks suck, probably because they get the stereotypical, canned domestic drinking rugby playing crowd in the place. (Then again, that may be a chicken or the egg scenario. Who knows?) They're weak, way overpriced and not made correctly. I don't think a bartender there knows what goes into a Cosmo. (Don't judge. It's got lots of vodka and is sweeter than a martini. At least, it's supposed to have a ton of vodka in it.) I've heard that they run a special on Thursday nights. Something involving 8 drink tickets for $10? Or maybe it's 10 for 8? According to some of my other friends, it's a lot of fun, but you will not see me in there any time soon.
