XIV falls under a category of restaurants I like to call "Places to Try When My Mom is in Town." I love delicious food, and am a big fan of Michael Mina, but I live on a student's budget. Really, the only place on Sunset Blvd. that I eat at with any degree of consistency is Burger King. So, when my mom came in to town to celebrate the opening of my art exhibition down in Culver City, I finally had the financial backing to satisfy one of my culinary dreams. And I have to say, XIV did not let me down. I enjoyed the ambiance of the restaurant, which is best described as funky rococo. While we waited for our table to cleared, my party enjoyed a drink at the bar. At the time, I had just turned 21 and was still feeling my way around the many modes of intoxication. The bartender was very knowledgeable, and helped me select a cocktail based on what I did, or did not, like to drink. I had both the Scottish Mule and the English Breakfast, which together formed a delicious departure from my usual beer selection. My mother, being in a celebratory mood, decided it would be fun to get the fourteen course tasting menu. Now, I love trying a bit of everything when going to a nice restaurant for the first time. But my being a vegetarian usually bars me from participating in these culinary adventures. Not at XIV. After explaining my conundrum to the waiter, she spoke to the chef, who visited our table in person to affirm what I could and could not eat. The food was delicious, augmented by the fact that the chef did his best to match my plate with that of my meat-eating companions. For example, he substituted hearts of palm when my mother and boyfriend had pork medallions, a pine nut terrine when they were served foie gras, and a portobello burger when they had Kobe beef sliders. My food was flavorful, filling, and comparable to, if not better than, the carnivorous options (seriously, I had to fight my mom off my pine nut terrine, it was that good). XIV was a great experience, in that the staff went above and beyond the call of duty to deliver the same culinary experience they promise to their meat-eating guests. Couple that with a fun atmosphere, great company, and good drinks, and you're set for a wonderful evening. Just remember to bring your AmEx black card. Or your mom.

The only people that go here are high school kids with fake ID's. The promoters also will lie to everyone that you are on the list and hold you purposely so you have to pay the cover charge even if you have VIP access.... that's just shady crap you would expect at a high dance hahaha.... I wouldn't recommend a place where their word is only as good as eating shiiiit =/
