where else should a single woman in the city have cocktails after work? let's just say, i was the only one. ran into a coworker on the street. he invited me in. paul was the bartender. he was funny and sweet. made me feel comfortable. it was a wed late afternoon. it wasnt busy, but everyone in there was super friendly. i swear, the martinis are bucket sized! the music was great. it was music videos. i didnt see the other floors or the outside area. next time, i guess. good times, good times!

At this point I've been to 111 Minna a few times and I've got to say it's one of my favorite places to go out in the city. Low key crowd, minimal skanks, good music and not too horrible drink prices. They really need to have more bartenders per bar though and stock the ladies room with more toilet paper. Please! Bonus points for having a coat check. I've been here to see live music and this weekend they even had live art happening in the side room. It's fun to people watch here. Over the weekend I saw my share of ABDC wannabes, old white dudes checking out Asian chicks and sensitive thugs.

Red House is hip yet approachable. Stocked with a decidedly un-fratty crowd, good beer, and excellent bartenders, it's probably my favorite place to hang out and have a beer these days. The decor is cool ironic kitsch without being obnoxiously scenester and the front yard area has tables, chairs, trees, and twinkly lights aplenty. It's never noisy, the people (staff and patrons) are friendly and will likely strike up conversation with you, and it's clean. The only drawback is that they close at midnight, which, as I understand, is due to there being a church catty-corner to them and a 50's throwback law re: demon liquor tempting righteous folk away from worship of the Lord. Good ol' Texas. I find several reviews saying that the bartenders are rude, and in their defense, that's never been my experience. However, I feel for them because there are only two on any given night, no waitresses, and no barbacks, so they're having to juggle more than your average bartender. Be sweet to them.
