Let me break it down for you. This place = NOT OKAY. All right, maybe that was a tad harsh, but if you're anything like me (and geeze, I hope not because well, sucks for you!) and you're a tad older and not too fond of rambunctious young 'ums - stay far away from Prague. It's my own dang fault because I had no idea this was a 18+ bar/club, being led here by a friend after we asked him for a "good dancing spot." I mean sure there is dancing to be had, but the music was a little strange and dated on this particular Saturday - 90's hits piped into the near empty and not in the quirky hilarious way. More like in the the "what the heck?" kind of way - yeah. How to describe the ambiance? Secret lair like? It's "underground" and very dark. It is quite spacious - I'll give it that. Really spacious at around 11 p.m. because it was mostly deserted - which the ladies' restroom attendant said was uncharacteristic of Saturdays (maybe ACL had worn everyone out?). I will say she was especially nice and chatty. The few other "dancers" weren't exactly the college crowd, but definitely young, a couple of them underage. I did think the bartender was a sport when we asked for "vodka and soda with a lot of limes" and he produced a couple of drinks fully rimmed with lime wedges. Lime tree-ed vodka sodas - kind of cute. I will say that this place remains open post-2 a.m. so we did wander back here for a second go-around but left with haste as it was just more of the same . . .

This was our 4th stop in our downtown bar hopping (Seven Grand, Spring St, Gorbals) and one of my most curious one.  I've seen the reviews and read about this place also on the LA Weekly Happy hours.  And HOLY SHIT!  I was WOW-ed.  I mean, mouth-open wide-eyed gasping impressed. The alleyway entrance seemed unique but with a lack of people there, I was expecting this place to maybe be dead.  My friend had on his dark lacoste sneakers and they informed him that he needed dress-shoes "next time" ;D awesome, we're in.  I was wearing jeans and a cute top, but definitely felt underdressed.  Next time, I'll dress up 1920s style red-lipstick and long black gloves. Once you go downstairs, it's crowded and live jazz is vibrating through my veins.  Bars are located in different area so getting a drink was easy.  I got midori sour cz I let my friend choose for me.  Otherwise, it would have been a martini for sure.  Walking around, the vast space of this place is impressive.  There are steam engines, wall projectors of old movies, and  great furnitures.  It's great for conversations, and people watching as they are dressed super nice.  Also, getting service is a breeze as the waitresses (all dressed the same) come around frequently. Because we didn't get dessert at Gorbals, we got the cupcake, nutella creme puff, and cookie platter that comes with some cold milk.  YUM.  The cookies were really warm and it was just perfect!  Then we got the absinthe cocktail which has champagne in it.  It was good.  But later, the green fairy was going around with cart and I wish I had waited a little bit. I love this place.  I'm definitely coming here from now on, and gonna bring everybody else here =]. -P.S: they dress like Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character from inception.  HOT!

I was with a large group of friends for dinner and my first visit to Velvet.  When you arrive and try and find this place, look for the large brushed aluminum facade.  Entry is quick and easy, had a great mango margarita at the bar while waiting for the rest of our party to arrive, before I could pay for the beverage the hostess had our table ready (they don't make you wait for your entire party like most places).  The complimentary chips, salsa, and beans were amazing.  While we were waiting we decided to take advantage of the "Special Margarita"'s for $5, what a deal and strong also! The food was great, not the best Mexican food I have eaten, but a top 5 for sure, the burrito was as large as my plate!!  The wait staff is very friendly and helpful, although I do find it distracting when servers "auction off" the food as it arrives at the table. All in all, a great dinner in a trendy restaurant for a decent price.  Paid $25 for dinner, margarita, tax, and included gratuity.  Check this place out!
