by Laurel B. on Depending on the act, this can be a good place to hear the "big act" in a smaller venue. By big act, I mean stuff that's cutting edge enough that it's more than the local cool stuff that's playing in certain bars (and I have some favorites there). So, for example, I saw Cesaria Evora here, sitting at a cafe table (we were, and so was she) (she lasted maybe part of an act before lighting up in violation of SF smoking ordinances, and boy did she seem happy about it). That was one of my best Slim's experiences: we even drank champagne (tres elegant). I've also been mashed in, wall to wall, seeing folks like Nouvelle Vague. I always have a good time. It's maybe not a standard haunt, but I always check out what's playing here, because often it's quite good.
