by K P. on My fiance and I went to Velvet Margarita last night for "date night", even though I think "date night" is a stupid concept for two people who live together and all that. However, its important for the relationship and I've yet to come up with a better name for it. I was able to drag the old man out to LA because I bought the Groupon deal that was going around a few months ago. The plan to acquire tequila was foolproof! Anyhow, we arrive, parking is hectic, but that's no surprise. We're seated fast and the service is really good. Like, really, really good. Travis was a rockstar server and we appreciated him muchly. The decor is interesting, I really loved the other review that said it looked like a Tim Robbins designed Mexican restaurant and I couldn't get that comment out of my head all night. I liked looking around at everything (metallic pinatas? awesome!), but it was really, really loud. It didn't make me hate it, but I didn't prefer the high volume. I started with the Velvet Margarita that comes in a pineapple and really loved it. I hate artificial flavors and this didn't taste really fakey. And it was mixed well enough so that I could tell it was a margarita and not a smoothie. Yay! Later on, I had the Velvet Chingon and I REALLY liked that one. I like to taste my poison...if you know what I mean. As for food, that was really where things got mediocre. The food tasted good, but it was nothing fabulous. The house chips and dip were great. The Ahi Tuna Ceviche was lemon juice/tomato heavy, and thus, light on the Tuna. My fiance had the scampi, which he liked. I had the grilled chicken with pineapple, and I'm almost positive one of the chicken pieces was undercooked. But....I didn't realize the texture was off until halfway through the piece because there was SO much pineapple salsa on it. (Sidenote: the pineapple salsa is fresh and delicious, oh irony....) Also, I couldn't see if it was pinkish in the middle because it was so dark in there, and I had eaten most of it. Yeah, so I felt kind of sick last night, but it could all be in my mind. Regardless, I don't know that I'll be back for dinner (not because of the chicken but because I was underwhelmed), but I really wouldn't turn down a round of margaritas there!
