The neighborhood was nail-biting and I wasn't immediately impressed by the cave-like mood of the restaurant- it felt cold and empty!  And  since I don't condone the use of fake flowers outside of senior homes, I wasn't won over by the decor either.  But this all proved irrelevant later when I realized I'd be eating while watching Soul Train reruns on a flat screen!  So cooooool. The service was quick, but I did come in when the place wasn't busy.  Anyways, their food had the most realistic "meat" texture I've ever had with vegan/vegetarian foods, even down to the shrimp, which was deliciously gummy (?!) as it should be.  I even thought the fake "bone" (stick/skewer) in the fried chicken was a cute touch, though I know some hardcore vegan out there is puking right now.  I hated the macaroni and cheese because I think the type of oil they used left a weird aftertaste. I would consider this the sinner's go-to for vegan food--it's good but it's still heavy.

I was really disappointed by my second experience here (dinner on July 12th). Four of us walked in and we were seated almost immediately, but it all went downhill from there. A few tables, including a large (8+) family group sat down in our section a few minutes after us. We ordered, and sat down to wait. Our salad came... It took our pizza OVER AN HOUR to arrive. By the time it'd gotten to us, all the people around us who'd arrived and ordered AFTER us were finishing their meals or already paying and getting out of there. To make matters worse, one of my slices of pizza had an extremely hard nut (we think... couldn't figure out what it was, exactly) that I bit down on at an angle. If I had bit down directly on it I probably would have chipped a tooth. Finally, to make it just a total loss of an evening, my friend and I were going to split our check on two cards, which the server said was no problem. Well, we got the receipts back to sign, and instead of putting half on my card and half on my friend's, my card had been run TWICE. ARGH. Not ever going there again.

CLIFFS NOTES: THE GOOD:  huge venue, thumping sound system, perfect for electronic music events. THE BAD:  classless, greedy bar minimum ($30-$40/card), bouncers/managers that deserve to get smacked, crappy for all other non edm events. I started going to this place as soon as I turned 21, and went for years because we had friends who worked there that made sure our cheap asses never had to pay.  This was back when it was advertised as (and was) the biggest Asian party on Friday nights. I initially enjoyed this place a lot because we knew plenty of people there and at the time, I had never seen a club so big, but as my tastes evolved in the Hollywood nightclub scene, this place became less and less attractive. The main selling factor is that the venue itself like everyone mentioned is HUGE.  The main room basically resembles a giant decked-out warehouse with tall ceilings and massive subwoofers that tower over the crowd.  Considering the massive size of the venue, Vanguard's "Funktion One" sound system is one of the better sounding ones I've heard, and it does an excellent job at reproducing the thumping bass that everyone is so ecstatic about.  It definitely hits harder than any other club I've djed at. There are also a splattering of other smaller rooms up- and downstairs, as well as a huge outdoor patio.  The 2,500+ capacity definitely trumps any and everything else in town. Now...everything has been positive so far, so you're asking why the 2-stars only?  Well for a first time clubber or your average amped-up raver going to see Benni Benassi, this place would knock your socks off.  However this place will fail to impress anybody who wants something less in-your-face and actually has a hint of class. Thorough pat-downs are mandatory at the door and they will not let you bring in any form of eye drops, opened packs of gum, etc.  Years ago I had actually begun to think that this was the norm in Hollywood...thank god I was wrong. Twice, my group and I were turned away at the front door, only to be told by the bouncer to wait a little and come back because supposedly the owner of the club has cameras at the door to screen people who looked like they had started trouble in the past.  We eventually got in, but I found this both amusing and absurd since we came every single week, knew all of the promoters, and look far from the thuggish type.  I guess we Asians do all look alike huh?  Not. The bouncers for the most part look like your typical wannabe hard asses you'd find in Fontucky or Rialto, not Hollywood, and the skinny Caucasian dude always posted up at the front (some type of manager I suppose) can be a big douche bag smartass.  Zero-class. But who can blame them...there was a shooting on one of these Friday nights only two years back that left one bouncer dead.  And the crowd on those Asian nights eventually became both incredibly more fobby and more ghetto (don't know how that's possible) and eventually the Asian nights were no more. I haven't been to this venue in over a year and I'm sure the crowd has changed a little, but I can't imagine the venue or management being much different than in the past. Basically this venue was pretty much built for the Saturday electro events, so for these, the Vanguard is GREAT.  But aside from that, coming from somebody who isn't high-class or snobby by any means, let me tell you that you'll want to look elsewhere for a nicer weekly place to club at.
