One of my favorite "gastropubs" in Philly. This place was started by the same guys who got the entire gastropub genre going with the Standard Tap. The place is a converted old-man bar at what was once a pretty unlikely corner of Frankford and Girard, but which is now along the northern fringe of development in the NoLibs area. The atmosphere still retains some of the divey old-man bar vibe mixed in with a generous helping of Santeria-shrine-looking stuff. Local and regional microbrews are always on tap. The upstairs has a cool performance space, but for the most part I go for the food and beer. Some people have decried the very generic menu descriptions on the blackboard menu, and truly they don't tell you very much. The servers are generally able to answer questions, though, and to tell the truth, they have a very nice hand in the kitchen and I've never been disappointed by simply placing my faith in the kitchen and ordering, the food is very tasty. Only thing I would say is be careful of sitting in the booths near the windows during cold weather, you'll freeze. Otherwise, this place is right at the top of the gastropub pecking order in Philly and you won't be disappointed unless you're expecting fancy schmancy haute cuisine. But if you are, you're probably hopelessly lost if you're down here anyway...

Wow, great place!! Visited from MA., friend raved about this place...she was on target. Only complaint- she neglected to warn me of how packed it can be..we shuffled in out of the rain to stand squished in the bar area, unable to move or see the stage- nor did she mention the fact that they only took cash. All of the seating was full, had I know to go early that would have prevented the 2 hours sitting on the wood floor crosslegged. But, even w/ the drinkless uncomfortable seating- it was worth it!! The poets were sooo good, the hostess was very funny and made the vibe perfect. So go early, bring cash and sit back, relax and enjoy- a must!!

they always have bizarre things on the menu and 6 choices at the most. the decor is pretty bizarre too, in a fun way. the restaurant's pickup truck claims "carman puts the cunt back into country" and she adds jelly beans, ice cream, and whatever else her little heart desires. she is a sweetie and a cutie. staff do a decent job and are friendly, usually wearing a trucker cap and showing a little butt cleavage.
