by Kent Frickson on I grew up eating the Varsity since I can remember. I grew up in Athens and there's a Varsity there that opened in 1932. Remember the nostalgia behind it all. The downtown Varsity is the Worlds Largest Drive-In. They cook over two miles of hot dogs, a ton of onions, 2500 pounds of potatoes, 5000 fried pies and 300 gallons of chili are made from scratch daily. (per the site). It is an establishment. The dogs are great and the frosted orange will take you back to your childhood. Don't forget the fried pies. IT IS FAST FOOD. Do not forget this. If you think you're going to get the same service as in the 60's and what really made the Varsity a legend, remember that society in itself is not he same. We do not live in a "Pleasantville" world. The food and the entire experience of the Varsity downtown and in Athens is something everyone should try at least once!
by Caroline R. on My girlfriends and I came here for the full experience a couple of weekends ago. When you know you want to eat, drink and dance, you have to be selective -- who wants to pay for a cab to get you from dinner to dancing? I think Loca Luna definitely delivered. FOOD: This is a tapas restaurant, and we ordered up a storm! I especially loved the calamari and the mussels dishes. The hummus was also delicious, and for dessert the tres leche cake didn't disappoint. DRINKS The mojitos were good, and when I ordered something else that I absolutely couldn't stomach (too sweet), our waiter was extremely nice about taking it back and bringing me something else. The highlight, of course, was when my girlfriend ordered some drink with the word "penis" in the name, and when it came out, it included a plastic penis straw sticking out of it! Come to think of it...I'm going to give this place 5 stars just for that! MUSIC There was a live band throughout dinner and of course afterwards as well. After their first set, while we were finishing our meal, they came around and gave us all their new CD. Sweet! They were very good, doing mostly Latin (which matches the venue's theme), but also a lot of really good covers. DANCING As people finish dinner, the tables start to disappear and Loca Luna transitions into a dance club/bar. It's a smooth transition, really. Then this place was packed and hopping! The music was great for dancing, and service at the bar was good and the crowd was a pretty good one. Lots of guys with accents that night -- I could see that being a recurring trend, but maybe I'm wrong. Overall, a great experience. This place has everything you need for a great night out.
by Reed Marzette on You're drunk... and making your way home....you find your arterial arch nemesis with it's bright lights and the tractor beam of grease and whiz. It's pulling you closer and closer to the window...Your car is illegally parked but you don't care....The line is only 5 or 6 deep..(cue..evil laughter) it's definitely not the best, and it's definitely not the worst, but you compromise....That's right...you compromise your cheesesteak ego and better senses with a quick "whiz with" which comes out more like a "Waa waa" There's no tourists with cameras, no lines creeping out into 9th street on a Sunday afternoon.. You're now part of an elite drunken South Philly Society appearing only at night.....completely trashed and stuffing your face. (designated driver driving of course..lol)
