by Gene Schaad on I had a REALLY FUN Saturday evening at Velvet Margarita this past weekend. I've never eaten there or spent time indoors, but this review is completely for the outdoor patio with a DJ on a Saturday night. Bottom line is that if you like dancing outdoors with a group of friends, visit on a Saturday evening. Pros: - No cover to get in on a Saturday night at 9PM - Location on Cahuenga near Hollywood Blvd, exciting neighborhood. - Cool fresh air on outdoor covered patio. - Sound system was awesome, clear audio. - DJ mixed rock, pop, reggae, radio hits and every song he chose was great. I was dancing and so was everyone else. DJ was Andrew Brandt. - "Premium" margaritas were only $5, and were very good. - Their Pina Colada is made with a real coconut, and it was the best tasting drink I've had in 2010. - The crowd was friendly and normal people. Crowd was sparse at 9PM, and it got comfortably full around 11PM. - Comfortable chairs. Cons: - Had to park 5 blocks away (I wanted free street parking). - Sometimes smelled like cigarettes since smoking is permitted in the outdoor area.
by Lyndon Lockery on I've been waiting for this place to open...passing it daily on my way to the bus, sneaking peeks as it was all coming together. And its finally here! Went last Friday for Happy Hour and it was insanely packed...but the DJ spinning New Edition, the bartenders working their butts off making the 10-ingredient cocktails that no one has any business ordering when its this busy, and the crowd just feeling glad to be done for the week...brought a great energy to the place. I'm gonna give it a try mid-week so I can taste off the cocktail menu...the drinks look interesting... Suggestion: add another bartender on Friday HH, a few more seats wouldn't hurt, and don't you dare ever add a cover! :)
