When I walked into the King Cole Bar to meet a friend before we caught a broadway show, I was beaming already. Famous cocktails, A large mural behind the bar. Hmm - going by my experience with the one other place that has these two in common with the King Cole Bar (Angel's Share, duh), this sounds like a success formula. Clearly, even the mad servers at Angel's Share who run after me occasionally for tips AFTER I've tipped them 20% didn't prepare me for the underwhelming experience at King Cole Bar. Drinks: Was the Red Snapper pre-made? Probably, because they brought it out to me in exactly 30 seconds. Either that, or these guys have the worlds fastest mixologist. Was the Jazz Me Blues (grey goose pear, st. germain, champagne) delicious? A resounding yes. Moolah: I'm hardly one to raise my eyebrows at expensive cocktails. But a $24 dollar price tag on a cocktail made even me flinch a little bit. Ambiance: Clearly, the rich and the famous in the city love their drinks. The place was brimming at 6:30 PM on a Thursday, with people in Tiffanys and Bottega Venetas spilling out casually from the overflowing little space. Inside, it is warm, the the mural looking down at you, Old King Cole silently laughing. It's classy. Service: This was actually the sorest point of the evening. My friend and I slipped into the only place we could find, at the side of the bar. The server joked with us for a little bit and told us he'll try to stay out of our way. He didn't. During the course of the next hour, he politely nudged me (understandable). another server rammed the bar flap on my arm because I, like an idiot, had to go ahead and place my arm on the bar top (accidents do happen). bartender took away those delicious nuts from right under my nose after I'd ALREADY told him once that I was still working on them! (WTF). How I wish I had better things to say, but I've really seen better, you know. I'm used to cocktail bars treating me like I'm special. Because I am.

Well, I haven't dined here, I've only been here after dining has been slowly cleaned up and then out to relax with friends at the bar. They had a vodka night where any vodka drink was being subsidized by some vodka maker, so we had a few of those, most of them quite weak. At least they also served shots. Upstairs, the DJ sat playing his music which wasn't particularly loud, and below, the crowd was... quiet. There wasn't much happening at 11p, of course, so we ended up going to another location (Maritime) that was much busier and far more interesting. Much of the diners were still dining at 10p to 11p. Decor is pleasant, most of it as a red-brown motif (as per the name) but the bar didn't really seem to be inspired by the same designer, it felt almost out of place. The walls, too, odd, like big blown-out versions of a sofa's back of the seating.

Great time tonight (Friday 7/26). Thanks to my buddy's older brother running the event, we got whisked inside without paying, or waiting in that mob of a crowd outside -- via private VIP entry off to the side.  AND we had access to the STAGE all night! It was wild. Nothing crazier than being able to enter two guarded VIP-only bar and lounge sections and also being able to get onto the massive stage where the DJ is spinning and dancing in front of hundreds of wasted party-goers. It was a good mix of electronica and rock music. Came here when Busy P (the manager of Daft Punk) came to spin for the night. Good stuff. As a venue, it didn't get any more stars because I'm more partial towards smaller and more tightly run clubs such as Opera, where they don't pack what seems like a thousand people into the venue, making it unbearably crowded. For a Hollywood dance club, it's got a very Vegas-style setup with tons of space to move around and soaring ceilings (I'd say they're about 45 feet and higher in the main dance area). It's very big in square footage, but the main public areas get so crowded it's almost unbearable to make your way through the sea of bodies. Thank God for having the option to escape to the VIP areas from all the chaos...otherwise I would've ranked it a few stars lower. Pros: Lots of bar areas; huge projector screens and great lighting effects; excellent sound system. Cons: Way too big, main stage feels like a concert hall; 18+ night; unattractive crowd.
