duh. i'd give this place 10 stars if i could. i'm rating the heaven, known as saturday night @ silk city when dj deejay djs:) this is the type of hangout that i was looking for when i moved here. i was 25, new in the city looking to dance, drink, dance, drink and not get hit on or pushed around or judged by a bunch of buffoons. the eclectic crowd, disco balls, dance floor, crowds, the bar, the diner attached and of course the dj makes it my favorite hot spot on saturdays. sure, the dance floor is small. big whoop. even better everyone together, dancing and cutting up a rug. dj deejay really brings everything together with his pop and old school spins. something everyone can love and appreciate while there. his britney nights are amazing too. come awn...who doesn't want to go to a britney, madonna & gaga themed party? it also helps that girls can go to be girls and dance and carry on and not be groped, robbed, drugged and just have a blast. i wish i could get there on a weekday for other themed nights. ps. their food in the diner is pretty amazing. the beer garden also helps with the crowd as well:) i love you silk.

I have been a Gold's member for a few years now. I like Gold's mainly because they have locations across the country and some international gyms as well. Since I travel occaisionally for work, it's good to know I have a gym to use when I'm on the road. The Research Blvd (US HWY 183) location is my primary gym in Austin. It's my favorite location because of the layout and equipment. There is a good cross section of Austinites, all of whom are there for a solid work out instead of posing for the benefit of others or maybe for themselves. Since I work way south I use the West William Cannon location during the week sometimes as well. The equipment variety is good at nearly all locations and as long as you can avoid peak hours, you can get on machines fairly easily. The only classes I attend are group cycle or RPM; there are several good instructors in the Gold's Gyms in Austin. The trainer services they offer at any location are a ripoff though. My wife used a trainer to help recover from a herniated disk. While they do have good tips to offer, they seem disinterested during sessions. And if you miss an appointment, forget making it up or getting a refund for the missed appointment. If your payments process smoothly then everything is okay on that front. But any changes in payment arrangements have the potential for major screw-ups. It took us seven months to clear up our payment arrangements through automatic draft. It should have been simple but Gold's managed to screwed it up. Still I like Gold's because of locations, convenience, hours, equipment, and the spin classes. These reasons, for me, outweigh the negatives.

NOTE: This review is of the SUPERBOWL party ONLY! I'm not a huge fan of Jillian's, but it's a big place that can hold a big party. I guess that's why we went there for the year's biggest party. No...not NYE....the SUPERBOWL! I have to say that I was pretty impressed. There was definitely a crows - almost no place to sit in the main room with the giant TVs. Maybe that's because we got there at 3pm. I'm sure if we got there around 2:30, we'd have a table and would have chilled to watch the whole game. But what's the fun in that, right? We managed to find a place to sit over in the billiards room. They board up the tables so it becomes an area where you can sit and have food and drinks. Good job with this, as it was a great setting. Sure, the TVs in this room were small, but there were plenty of em all around. The openness of the room with the big windows made it a really nice setting. The wait staff was really good as well. I was impressed with our waitress who always would come around to check up on us, but not in the annoying way. She was friendly and helpful. We did get some food and beers and she was prompt with them all. All in all, I really liked this place for a superbowl party setting. I might have to come back next year and get there early so we can secure a place in the main room.
