This lunch was one of those experiences when the various elements of the hour or so we spent here just didn't match up enough to make a cohesive, blanket-statement review possible. So I'll go category by category instead: Chips and dips: A category of their own. Good! Black bean dip needed a bit more of a kick, but it was a nice variation on the red, green or dark red options you get most places. Salsa rojo was fine. Crispy, dippable chips! Entrees: My spinach enchiladas were truly ordinary. I liked that the spinach was fresh, and the tortillas were good, but the verde sauce did nothing for me. Beans and rice got a resounding 'oh well.' His large meat portion was just what he wanted, and his plantains (which I tried and were the best thing I ate) and sausages were an interesting and tasty accompaniment. Interesting menu overall! Somewhat expensive, though, especially for a spur-of-the-moment lunch decision on our way home. Service: Our waiter didn't really know what was vegetarian on the menu (answer seems to be spinach enchiladas, spinach quesadillas and modified salads) and was a bit hesitant otherwise, but overall the place seemed well-run. There was a water spill that, for once, wasn't my fault. Ambiance: Open, airy, neat and pretty space that does a pretty good job of hiding the fact that no one element is spectacular. Odd fact: We spotted at least seven security cameras within sight of our table. Why so paranoid? Menus were high-quality, and place settings were fine. I imagine it'd only be nicer at night. Future: I could see coming here for cocktails and appetizers (maybe chips, salsas and plantains?) if I were in the area for happy hour, or for a special occasion for my meat-eating man, who has fond memories of the Dallas version. But I probably won't stop in for what I think is probably just so-so Salvamex anytime soon.

The velvet is a cool spot, first came here a while back for a friends b-day, I really like that they kept there own vibe and groove going and didn't give into the Hollywood trendy I wanna be scene Tmz montage. The salmon quesidilla is bad but bad meaning good! Enchiladas are good as well and the drinks are rocket fuel. The dining area always seems like a different crowd than the patio out back... the patio's where the party's at! This is another spot I find that non Hollywood type peeps tend to really enjoy also! I don't know what all the gripes about service is, but everyone's cool with me.
