by Tiffany G. on Last night I went with a group of six to enjoy the prix fixe menu for New Year's Eve. It was my first time eating at South City Kitchen and it will not be my last. What an incredible dining experience. The interior feels very warm and cozy because the restaurant is inside an old house. The service was prompt, attentive, and knowledgeable. And the food was amazing. All in our party raved about the food. I ordered the following: Appetizer: The She-Crab Soup was the best I have ever had--super creamy with delectable slivers of crab throughout, a little spicy kick, and a hint of sherry. I also sampled my husband's Fried Green Tomatoes. When we return, I will truly be torn between ordering those or having the She-Crab Soup again. The Fried Green Tomatoes were also the best I've ever had--covered in a thin layer of perfectly crisped crust which conceals just enough goat cheese beneath. Husband allowed me one bite before he promptly devoured the rest. Entree: The Buttermilk Fried Chicken was just as amazing as everyone says. I ordered it despite my aversion to collard greens (which I did sample and enjoy, but I saved my room for the more appealing chicken and potatoes). The chicken was perfectly fried in the same thin layer of crust that came on the tomatoes. You get two huge boneless hunks of meat on a bed of smashed potatoes. This is a good and hearty meal that blows the average Southern fare out of the water. Dessert: The Sticky Toffee Pudding also arrived in a generous helping, but I was nearing full capacity at this point. It was very sweet and had the consistency of a bread pudding with a dollop of what tasted like sour cream. The prix fixe menu really gave us our money's worth, but we will be sure to return in the future to sample more of what this great restaurant has to offer. I am already making a list of people who will have to come with us to enjoy SCK.
by anna marie c. on patience is a virtue that i do not have. bobby flay (i do love throwdown) + burgers = what could go wrong? so it's a gorgeous sunny day in west philadelphia, and it's 11am and i'm hungry. off i trek in search of the perfect burger. so the rate limiting step between me and my slab of meat turns out to be the line of hungry people...and one cashier. i mean, really? it's lunch time, there's a line out the door, and you have *one* cashier at the register?? it's enough to get this now hypoglycemic girl in a little hissy fit. once i sat down and had a bite of my burger (a little bit pinker than the medium i asked for and too many sesame seeds on my bun)... i calmed down a bit. it was a good burger. the sweet potato fries with a too watery honey mustard dipping sauce were also pretty good. dear bobby, now that you've got your food down, can you work on efficiency? thanks. amc
