After visiting Cat Club on a Saturday night, I've determined that the best night is definitely Thursdays. Don't get me wrong, it was still fun, but it was quite empty and the crowd was crazy. Just a different crowd than I'm used to. I love 80s night, so I'll be back, but I don't think I'll be back any other night...

I just saw the Paquaio / Hatton match here last night, and I just realized that I may have a bit of a 'Fight Club' Complex. UFC, Boxing, Sumo Wrestling (ok, maybe that's not exactly a blood sport, but you get the idea...) are not only entertaining to watch, but i've noticed that i really get into watching these matches. Sure there's a perfectly reasonable scientific or Freudian explanation that involves dredging up repressed memories from my childhood, but feminism be damned, I like watching brutes slug it out in a ring of some sort. Its exciting, and fun, and just for that time, I forget that I'm a 5'0, petite Asian girl, and believe i can hang with the big dawgs, drinking some brewskies, and shit talk with the best of them... Now watching brutes slug it out on a GIANT WALL O' TV's, at Jillians is even better. When I patronize Jillians I'm on a mission to either watch some blood sports or play some pool. The food is just an added bonus (fluff if you will) and honestly, its pretty good for what it is. After watching the last 3 Paquaio fights here, my all time fave pick is the sesame teriyaki wings with wasabi cucumber dipping sauce. A platter of that between friends + a couple of drinks = good times / time on the stairmaster. During 'normal' days, service has always been prompt, efficient and cheerful. On big nights (like last night) service can be slightly challenging due to the high capacity. I felt sorry for the servers watching them desperately try to beat a path between the kitchen and tables without having their heavy trays knocked down by enthusiastic fans. ( I hope those guys got hazard pay or lots of good tips for that ordeal) Which brings me to my next point: Who the eff comes to Jillians for a 'fine dining' experience? Its an overglorified sports bar people, that just happens to serve fancier variations on classic bar / pub fare. Don't let the posh facade fool you: you're still in a sports bar. Sure drinks are a wee bit expensive, but its on par with the prices you'd pay in other neighboring establishments and is to be expected considering the rent they must be paying for that GYNORMOUS space. My only complaint (and minus one star) was that they were charging $25 for standing room only for last night's fight. Yes, that huge space was crammed with fans but given that the match ended after 2 rounds, it still kind of sucked to pay that much. Normally, I'd suggest arriving earlier to secure a table (like we normally do) but note that the place was jam packed by the time we got there at 6:30.

This Tangerine is most certainly not a living reflection of a dream. I've been to a couple Starr places, and the theme that comes from them (Continental, Jones, and now Tangerine) is that the focus is definitely on the decor, rather than the food. That's more palatable at a lower priced joint like Jones, but when you're shelling out more, it kind of gets to you. Bottom line is that the place is cool, the service is average, and the food is a bit below average for the price.
