Ate here last night on a date and absolutely loved it.  Below is my review of the 8 course tasting we were presented with: Course 1) Heirloom beet salad, burrata, wild arugula, aged balsamic, new olive oil: The beets were a little over salted, but the flavor was really quite excellent otherwise.  Nice texture as well on the beets (both dark purple and tan in color). 7/10 2) Beef shabu shabu, matsitake mushroom dashi, foie gras, radish, cilantro: I thought the "shabu shabu" broth on this was a little on the luke warm side but the slice of Wagyu they put in the bowl was nothing short of amazing.  The "morsel" of foie gras was by far the best I've ever had.  Smooth and flavorful with hints of vanilla - wish they would've given me more!  A++ excellent. 8/10 3) Nantucket bay scallop tempura, cauliflower, passion fruit, almonds: Possibly tied with #6 below for the best course of the meal, the scallops were perfectly cooked and paired amazingly well with the "bubbles" of crunchy tempura and chopped almonds.  A slight sear on them gave way to the smooth yield of what you'd expect from a perfect scallop.  You could not dream up a better scallop dish.  The passion fruit glaze on the bottom only added to the party.  10/10 4) Striped bass, artichoke, la ratté potatoes, amaretto onioins, black truffle: Didn't find much black truffle in this one but the fish was cooked properly and had a really nice flavor.  The little onion disc was caramelized perfectly.  Enjoyed this one but was left wishing they had chosen to use a more oily fish like a Chilean Seabass instead of the striped.  8/10 5) Piedmontese Filet Mignon, padron peppers, creamed corn, chantrelles: Really liked this one.  The filet was cooked perfectly mid-rare and I was surprised at the two decently sized slices I was served for this tasting.  The flavor was satisfyingly smokey and well rounded.  The mini padrons were perfectly grilled and paired well.  The creamed corn was the stand-out star of this plate, however.  At least tied with the Ritz (newport beach) for the best I've ever had.  Perfectly al dente corn with sweet cream notes, creme fraiche, and a perfect mouth feel.  The chandrelles were left pretty much alone and added a nice texture. 9/10 (largely due to the corn). 6) Tai Snapper, tapioca-crusted, broccoli rabe, white soy vinaigrette: My vote for the best course.  Deliciously prepared snapper, coated and quickly fried for a thin and crisp coating - almost like tempura but even lighter; sitting in a pool of vinaigrette  over the nicely seasoned  broccoli rabe.  According to our server, it's their most popular dish on the tasting menu or as an a la carte entree.  I can see why.  Amazing execution of a very simple and memorable dish.  10/10 7) Kobe burger, trio of french fries, farmhouse cheddar, "secret sauce": The burger was clearly ground kobe.  Impossibly smooth in texture and flavorful, it was paired with duck fat-fried potatoes with red onion ketchup and served on a brioche bun.  Shockingly delicious.  The farmhouse cheddar was white, and served with the thinnest slice of tomato i've ever seen.  The fries and the ketchup were practically worth the price of admission alone. 9/10 8) House-made geletain, rhubarb, toasted almond ice cream/foam, short bread points: For a gourmet jello course I thought this was pretty good.  The rhubarb was diced into the jello and added a nice texture but the toasted almond ice cream was the real star here.  It was creamy and the flavor was spot on. 8/10 All-in-all I thought the service was impeccable and the atmosphere excellent.  Will definitely plan a visit to XIV again soon to sample more of Michael Mina's masterpieces.

I would have given the old Rassella's on California 5 stars, but the new place just doesn't live up to its greatness.  It's not as loungey as the old place, and the music tends to be a little more hit or miss.  I've seen some great music here, and then some that is just mediocre.  One thing you can always count on though is a very lively crowd.  It's also a good place to grab a drink before or after the Fillmore.
