I am giving 4 stars since I went with Austin Concierges and of course they want to impress us. I will update my review when I go again on my own. The place is super tiny, but it has a lot of spunk. The art and ambiance are fantastic and with it being a small place it really makes it feel very trendy and Austin-y. It was not super busy when we went which was around 7-8PM but I hear that it gets extremely busy after 9PM. They stop serving food at 11 so be aware. The menu is really cute as well and it changes regularly with what is in season and what they can get from local farms. All of their food comes from places nearby so everything is very fresh. There is a page in the menu that lists where they get all of their stuff. Since I went with Austin Concierges and Guest Services Association they gave us a little taste of just about everything. We had a cheese plate and the meats plate and both were excellent. I did not care for some of the meats but that was just a personal preference and the rest of my party really enjoyed it. They also served us some of their shrimp and grits and the shrimp were super fresh and delicious. I grew up on the gulf so I know fresh seafood. The food was a little pricey but you are paying for quality, not quantity. Their drink list was impressive. A lot of the cocktails had things that I had never even heard of and I am not that sheltered. We had a table of 6 so we each had a different drink and passed it around so we could taste them all. Kudos to the yellow drink with absinthe in it!!! It was really really good. We had so many different things I cannot remember the names of any of them. You can tell that the bartender takes a lot of pride in making the drinks and it is worth it. Plus, there is plenty of alcohol in the drinks. If I am paying $10 for one drink it better give me a nice buzz. This is not a place to just order a vodka and tonic though. If you go, stick with their cocktails you will not be sorry. Their beer list is equally impressive. They strive to carry the hard to find beer and they are cheap. Their beer list also changes regularly depending on the availability. Like I said they like to carry the hard to find, not common types of beer so you may go one time and they will have it but the next time it will not be there anymore. Try them while you can! Overall we had an awesome time and I cannot wait to come back. The only problem is that the place is really small and it gets really busy. It is also a trendy, hipster kind of place so if that isnt your thing do not come here. The place has only been open about 8 months so lets give them a shot to see what they can do. This place definitely has the potential to be a really cool Austin hangout.

I have now been to Sushi House Hayakawa four or five times so I can safely write this review.  The rave reviews about this place (even from well-trusted rateclubsers) made me believe that perhaps I was missing something...or that I had gone on bad nights.  I haven't written anything on this place up until now because I really wanted to like this place.  However, I'm just going to come out and say it now, that it has not lived up to all the hype. Let's talk about the good points first.  It can be a fun environment.  The sushi chefs will sometimes play games with the patrons and it is USUALLY a very welcoming environment.  (I'll get to the "usually" later)  Some of the food is pretty good as well.  They make a nice agadeshi tofu and some of their appetizer dishes are quite good.  Strangely enough, after at least four visits, I have concluded I prefer their appetizer dishes over their sushi. Now onto the negatives:  I haven't ever been there when the the fish was that impressive or fresh.  Initially, I thought that I was going at the wrong time of the week before a fresh shipment, but I've been there on different nights of a week.  The waitstaff also seems a bit flustered when things get busy. While everyone seems genuinely very nice and usually very welcoming, it seems that the restaurant just doesn't stay cool under pressure.  Again, the people are nice, there just isn't a great system in place.  We've had our food delivered to the wrong table and our glasses almost always empty. Would I recommend this place? It definitely does not make my top Atlanta sushi restaurant list.  However, if you are in the area and are looking for sushi, I wouldn't write it off either.
