by Hyun Lafleche on Was able to visit XIV during dineLA week! We had reservations for 8:30pm, but unfortunately were not seated until about 9:15pm - eek! The whole restaurant concept flew over my head... I thought "XIV" was an allusion to King Louis the XIV, which triggered me to expect French food. However, upon entering the restaurant, the dining room was very reminiscent of Tres' (SLS Hotel) with its different chairs and quirky living room set up. To boot the menu offered a large variety of cuisines and food including ahi tuna tar tar, tomato soup and grilled cheese, hanger steaks, etc - very (New) American. Tables and chairs are arranged haphazardly and seating can be very cramped. Service is not memorable...not bad, not overwhelming, but lots of people are involved. There is the main waiter, the supporting staff (water, bread, silverware), and the food runners and clearers. XIV puts a lot of emphasis on initial smells and the mixing of ingredients table-side. The lamb dish was unveiled at our table, releasing exquisite earthy smells of sweetness and comfort. The tuna tartar was combined table-side which made a nice show and offered an amazing aroma of smells as the tuna combined with minced garlic, quail egg yolk, and pine nut oil. We dined on: +Ahi Tuna Tartare w/ ancho chile, pears, pine nuts, sesame oil Probably my favorite of the night though I would have preferred a lighter root vegetable chip to my white toast points. The sesame oil and pine nuts is absolutely imperative to this experience! Great sushi grade tuna! +Red Curry Squash Bisque - spiced marshmallow emulsion Poured table-side, the perfect balance of sweet and spice makes this soup an absolute dream! +/-Oak Fired " Hanger Steak" w/ duck fat frittes, bone marrow bordalaise sauce Say "duck fat frittes" and you've got my panties in a twist! I was so anxious to sample these delectable potatoes, it was hard to wait...until I actually got them. Served shoe string style, it's hard to detect a difference in taste between these fries and any other frittes you've ever consumed. The meat was cooked perfectly, but lacked a memorable flavor and unfortunately, the sauce did not help either. ++/-Braised Lamb Tajine w/cous cous,dates,saffron tomato broth Much sweeter (and flavorful!!!!) than the Hanger Steak, but very sweet and fragrant! A forkful of this lamb made my steak look like the last picked kid for a dodgeball team, but with so much flavor, I couldn't imagine consuming this whole dish alone!!! - Milk Chocolate "Candy Bar" w/malt ice cream, brownie, whiskey caramel The layers were presented very nicely with a clear difference between the brownie and caramel layer. However the caramel tasted/looked very plastic-y. Anything " a la mode" deserves bonus points in my book, the malt taste was hardly noticeable, but the ice cream gave the dessert its decadence and really tied all the otherwise rubbery components together. +/- Michael's Root Beer Float w/warm chocolate chip cookies REAL sarsaparilla in this rootbeer! Reminds me of the Manhattan Special soda you get at Galco's...very good!!! Cookies were too oily for my preference...but I'm impartial to my own CCC recipe...so I'm bias. Coming back for more? With there terrible location, $10 valet price, long wait (despite a reservation), and misunderstood restaurant concept....not a chance.
by Magda Kunka on Ok people lets stop being sheep here. Delux is nothing but an extremely overpriced low quality burger place. People are stuffed in here like cattle. The fact that so many people rave about Delux is just another thing I dont understand. I tried this place twice, (I will always try a place twice in case they have an off day) and I was very very disappointed both times. The burger I ordered was $11. ELEVEN DOLLARS FOLKS!!!!! No burger no matter how incredible is worth anywhere near $11. And of course this did not come with frys or anything else. The burger was kinda mushy with no flavor at all. The bun was very plane and did not have the best texture. I also ordered the sweet potato frys and did not like them at all. That was the first time I had ever had those so it could be I just dont like that type of french fry. The second time I ordered the regular frys and they were pretty undercooked with no seasoning. This place proves my theory, if you make it snooty enough everyone will think its good matter how bad the food is. Delux is nothing but hype. If you want to try a real burger with great flavor and a descent price try Lenny's on Thunderbird and 35th ave. That's what a burger should taste like.
by Courtney C. on The music was not the bomb, and the service was mediocre. The bouncer was too cool for school (at least, HE thot he was), and basically set the tone for the pretentiousness inside. The best part of the evening was watching folks practically run into the garage door-sized mirror by the pool table thinking it was a doorway to the room behind it. If you decide to come to Atmosphere, the spot to be is 3 ft from this mirror. Any view will do =P
