I've been hearing a lot of hype about this place, so I was eager to go try it out. Being rather unfamiliar with middle eastern cuisine, I was looking forward to trying lots of new things. With their $36 tasting menu I was able to do just that. If you and a companion are willing to share, you end up getting a big dish of wonderful hummus, 8 different kinds of mini-salads, 6 different dinner items, and two different desserts! The variety was fairly dazzling. Here's how everything added up: - The hummus: lived up to its reputation as being outstanding. - The mini-salads: Lots of interesting flavors going on here. Think of every wonderful word related to taste and you'd find bites of it at some point -- zesty, spicy, smoking, citrusy, sweet -- it was all there somewhere. - Haloumi: wins the prize as our favorite dish of the night! - Fried cauliflower: They should serve this at ball games or fast food joints. Once people taste this version of salty-crunchy-snack-food-with-great-sauce they'd never crave nachos again. - Beef short rib: They took the meat off the bone and baked it into a little puff pastry, topped with sesame seeds, making a very tasty little meat pie. - Bone marrow: Never tried marrow before, but heard it was good. Felt that this dish fell short of expectations. The marrow just ended up tasting like fat to me, and you were supposed to make a little bruschetta out of it with some lentils (which had a little flavor) and toasts (which just tasted like plain old bread). Unless you were a huge fan of bone marrow and/or eating pure fat I would recommend trying something else. - Duck two ways: Another disappointment. Way number 1 seemed to be a somewhat oily sausage patty - good taste, but I didn't love the texture. Way 2 seemed to be charred cubes, which had great texture, but too little flavor for my liking. These tidbits were served on a bed of rice, which was fine, but didn't taste too different from Zatarans. Again, I recommend ordering something else. - The Steak: This dish redeemed the two previous ones. Steak chunks seared just perfectly, served with some sort of pureed eggplant goodness. - Dessert 1: chocolate-something-somthing wrapped in shredded phyllo dough. Great chocolate, but, as my wife put it, "Why are they hiding this great chocolate in shredded wheat?!" - Dessert 2: Pistachio cake, with rhubarb and ice cream. This one was wonderful. Wine choices were all great, and I very much appreciated that the waiter offered us tastings to help us choose our selections. I also started the meal with a cocktail: the marble rye. I expected something heavy and dark, but was pleasantly surprised when they delivered a light, citrusy, almost ice-tea-like beverage. Would definitely order again, even though the rest of their drinks also looked intriguing. The atmosphere of the place was very nice - a large open room, with huge panoramic windows looking out from their hillside perch over a fairly nice view. It was very pleasant to sit there and watch darkness close over the neighborhood as the sun set. I also dug the style of the place with its modern lines and old-world materials. Even on a slow Monday night where the dining room seemed to be at half capacity for the better part of the evening, service was leisurely and a bit clumsy at times (one of the second course dishes was forgotten and one wine order took over ten minutes to fill), but very friendly and quick to resolve any issues once we spoke up. This is not the place to go for a quick bite, but rather a place to hang out for a while and nibble on the many wonderful things that trickle out from the kitchen. I award rateclubs stars based on the following scale: 5: I would drive across town for this. 4: I'd go again if I happened to be in the neighborhood. 3: I'd return if I was in the neighborhood and everything else was closed. 2: I'd rather go hungry than eat here again. 1: I need to evangelize against this for the good of humanity. Zahav gets a 4+ from me (just a hair shy of 5). I hope to find a reason to head back there soon and I think anyone looking for something a little different from the normal "fine dining" faire would enjoy a meal here. Plus you can sample a huge portion of their menu for only $36 a person, which I love. Edited to add: the host mentioned that they are applying for a liquor license for an outdoor area, which would be great. They offer a lot of light dishes and fresh cocktails that would just be perfect for warm summer evenings.

My gay and I each had a stressful week so we decided to decompress last night with cocktails and a cheesy movie. Before heading down to 1000 Van Ness we parked our behinds on a couple of bar stools at Route 101. Last time I was there was almost 6 years ago when I was pregnant. I hasten to add that I only had 7-UP...my baby daddy drank beer while I looked on with envy. Anyhow, last night we only had about 30 minutes before the movie so we were in shot-slamming mode. The bartender raised an eyebrow at us but we paid him no mind as we plowed through 3 shots apiece. The bar is just as I remembered it...low-key, comfortable, completely lacking in pretense. And the perfect place to catch a nice glow before the show.
