*This is a review of the Mayan as a theater or concert venue and not as a club. Lucha VaVoom was my second experience at the Mayan, my first was as a venue for a Bloc Party show last summer. I will cut to the chase and say that this is my least favorite LA venue. It is in a scary part of town, the theater itself is so freaking hot without a trace of ventilation, the bar line takes a super long time and the bathroom situation is a joke. Apparently there is only one women's bathroom (four stalls) and you end up either feeling like you're going to pee your pants or risk the chance of missing out on twenty minutes of the show if you even dare to go get in line. I wish I could tell you that it's architecturally beautiful but I can only see traces of details because it is so dark inside. Last summer we couldn't find a cab to get back to our hotel so decided (very reluctantly) to walk. I thought we were going to get stabbed on the few blocks back. Hubby is a big guy (think UFC looking fight guy) and I could tell he too was a little worried. The only point I can give the Mayan is that occasionally they have good shows here.

Went with a few of my lady friends and had a good time. I'm not much of a clubber, but I sure like to dance. Mayan had different rooms and allowed us to start with a little salsa and then end the night with hip hop. I liked that there was enough room to dance. I'm not big on standing in one place and looking around all night. The bar was busy, but I was still able to get drinks.
