Trudy's get a bump up to 5 stars for personality and originality. We elected not to take advantage of their happy hour specials, but I have heard from reliable sources that their margs are fantabulous. We did start with chips, queso, and salsa and tried to not fill up on those. Their queso made my husband very happy as he has been on a 5 year mission (since his departure of South Texas) to find anything suitable. He got one of their humongous burritos while I was a little more adventurous and tried their shrimp stuffed avocado. I'll have to admit that I've never seen stuffed avocado on a menu before and I just had to try it (I can get fajitas anywhere). I decided to get the sauce on the side as I was advised that it was kinda spicy. It was awesome! Deep fried goodness with some cheese and shrimp - yum. I added just a little teeny bit of sauce and it gave it just the right amount of kick without me having to run for the nearest hydrant. I was so full afterwards but I turned down dessert (but I really wants to try the cream cheese filled brownie). Their waitstaff is funny quirky (in a good way) and earned their tip (very much on top of drinks, manager came out to see if the food was ok) and the kitchen was exceptionally quick as well. I can see why Trudy's would become a regular stop if I were in Austin.

Let me preface with this saying I had a Greek stepfather and spent a portion of my childhood living with his mother who was a great cook. So I can legitimately say not like grandma or Ya-ya use to make. I was extremely disappointed by the food. The calamari appetizer had quality squid but executed poorly. Tasteless breading served with an uninspired sauce that mostly likely started out in a jar. The avgolemono soup was OK. It was unbalanced with far too much lemon, not enough egg, overcooked rice, and chicken stock from a can. Then the entrees, wow, it was like they were talking my childhood and beating it with a can. The gyro had dry meat with too much tzatziki trying to cover up this fact. Also, it was amazing that the tzatziki was mostly yogurt, very little cucumber, and I think the dill was waved over the tub. The biggest crime here was the lamb dinner. Dry covered with some Hunt's gravy with no flavor and way too much fat. It's pretty bad when the best thing on your plate was the rice. The Greek pilafi was the best thing I ate here. We shared some baklava for dessert and it was good. It could have been better but it's a very fickle dish to begin with. They seemed to have use all walnuts and were light on the spices. I could chalk this up to personal preference. The service was OK, our staff seemed inexperienced but pleasant and helpful. Our waitress didn't know the difference between Pinot Grigio and Pinot Noir, but honestly you don't come to the big blue and orange building for the wine list but at least know the difference between red and white. They treated my son well, so it's fairly kid friendly in the evening. I will not be heading back, which is a shame because I would have really enjoyed a reasonably priced good Greek restaurant so close to home.
